Grieg Had One Lung
Hey!
One lung,
One ball,
One ovary:
We survive,
Y’all!
Defining
Genius.
Genius.

The Man Who Worried Incessantly
simply gave it up before the barbarians
swept through.
What was the use? Most would be beaten
and/or raped.
And the killing would be entirely random.
As Fortune would have it, he was packed
into a truck, heading for a upland meadow.
And firing squad.
When! The Leader spied him grinning insanely.
“I have such mud turtles around me!”
Thus became he a kind of Man Friday,
fetching drinks, and dressing him
for battle.
In the moment, though, helped roll
the bodies downhill.
The leader had volatile moods, but Friday
kept the smile pasted on.
After a year, they invaded the small kingdom
bordering the chaotic one.
A girl brought in after the day’s carnage.
She spoke in monosyllables. Pliant, yet somehow
defiant.
The leader rejected her. “Still water runs deep!
Give me the dizzy, shallow one always!”
But then thought it a Capital joke to give her to Friday.
“The Fool and the Mud Turtle!”
He often asked about the couple, but didn’t like
Friday’s replies. Not funny enough. Broke a pole
over his head one time.
As a result, Luonga and he plotted an escape
to a village so poor no one would ever bother
taking it.
Presently they reside in Gwandenka. That low place, and they, forgotten by God.
The Old Fools is their designation. Even the children and grandchildren call them that.

Systems
Surviving
Jenks and I only ones alive.
Half the plane still bobbed in the cove.
We buried bodies best we could. Piled rocks etc.
Phones worked, and after trying rescue channels--
no luck!--we quickly searched what fruits etc were
edible and not poisonous.
Kept working long after batteries should be dead,
so they were being charged by something.
Welcome to Satellite Orch! the screens finally
announced. You're guests, but encouraged to study
for citizenship.
We studied. Figured best way to survive.
Exact parallel to our old place with Constitution and Bill of Rights.
But laid on particularly thick.
Jenks gave a flat, smooth hand gesture, meaning
they lie like a rug. But to them, such a gesture meant things remain placid, courtesy of an enlightened government. An accidental plus for us!...they always watched, of course.
Anyway, we gave all the answers they desired, and
after a year or so, they sent an enveloping flag and
we were lifted up to an esoteric vessel and transported to Central Orch. And to a nice citizenship celebration.
Lots of a beverage that practically set one afire–-
national drink.
We're both married to Orchian women. They started with us as spies, but slacked off, and all that's forgotten.
The best thing about life here is the same as the place we left via that fateful airplane:
Human Nature to let the bullshit go after a while
and just live.

Gold!
I live in Cocoa Beach, Florida, and if the shooting war between staunch white Republicans and undocumented brown workers coincides with a Category-5 hurricane, blood will flow down from the causeways.
I hope to have a brick of Kraft cheese to strike a deal with a shattered guy bearing a loaf of bread.
I won’t sell my cheese outright. No way.
And neither I nor my future survival partner will accept a bar of gold.
