Gone One Morning
-James Baldwin had me in mind
when he said something like
You have to be pretty naive
about life to think you can get
through it clean.
-Well, things were working cleanly
indeed for you up to that horrendous
divorce!
-When I got filtered through law and
lawyers, Jack the Ripper looked
like a choirboy! The challenge then was
just to keep going, save a bit of face.
-Your darkest morning?
-Got up anyway...looked in the mirror…
face had gone...completely!
-Oh? And what’s this thing you’re
wearing around?
-This caricature? Children laugh!
Adults condescend with remarks
entirely bitter!
-Uh huh? Well, as long as your
wonderful Stelly presently adheres,
you'll have a life!
-She’s patiently preparing disaster.

Lies, High and Low
-This president lies more than his share!
I can’t figure why.
-The reason many men and women do.
To look better.
-We lie to boost our stock?
-Turgenev put it in a more literary manner:
Better the falsehood that exalts
than hosts of baser truths.
-Sometimes you feel like shit doing it.
But other times just terrific!
-That’s the art part.
-How come you can quote all these writers
and shit?
-Educated beyond my ability.

A Few Points Coming In
1 Well, they got their compromise!
2 And so fast-hatched and shoddy, it
favors us.
3 The main thrust was to save THEIR face!
1 They owe us one.
2 You mean when we’re neck-deep in mire someday?
3 Of their debt to us, we must constantly remind them.
1 Lest they shunt it, and us, aside out of embarrassment?
2 It always behooves us to remind them of embarrassment.
3 What is face-time for? Especially on the networks?
1 To twist it in unrelentingly!
