Neighb Asso
At the neighborhood association meeting to plan
the July 4th Picnic, Mackey asks how to vanish
without a trace.
Rosa Tessler, stuck with President this year, answers
“You’re not the type. Just being here shows civic
responsibility...or something.”
“Well, last year I missed, and got stuck with the Beanbag
Toss, and the teens use that for...well, mix marijuana
with lust.”
“Just why we need somebody like you in there policing!”
Bink Hoxley picked up on the “vanishing” theme.
“Impossible in this day and age! Can’t vanish. No way!
We’ll get yuh anyplace.”
Millie Jaegers inquired “Just how old is this Scotch?”--
but that was later at the Thoreau Club meeting.
(Before we get accused of being literary, Thoreau as
in Th-ROW drinks back!)
Old Man Carruthers cracked “Nothing on the label, so at
least a month.”
After everybody got cheaply mellow, Mackey’s question
re disappearing was again taken up. More informally,
if that’s possible.
“Knock off the Dollar Store deodorant, and you gotta
head start!”--from Cliff N. T. Baumer, who could use some.

Water and Depth
His Friend, Ridge
-You know, Ridgey, my condo‘s on a river. Water, yes?
-I’m following.
-It’s pretty at sunset, and when the dolphins come, but I don’t go into it any further than that.
-So what?
-Thoreau makes me guilty with all the detail about Walden Pond.
-Hey! He’s a philosopher. Deeper and deeper into shit!–-what they do.
-I still don’t feel quite right...
-Look at me! Omar Khayyam says I was never deep in anything save wine? Well, I was never deep in anything, period!
-You exaggerate!
-Understate.

Life and Books
-Thoreau was right. Have a sparse place. Easy to clean
without the dusty knickknacks. Thus, your mind clean also.
-I’d go along, but would add a woman.
-Ever met one not cluttered?
-Nope.
-Case closed!
-How ‘bout a man?
-Do you swing that way in addition?
-I mean for companionship. You’re projecting awful lonely!
-The only trouble there would be attitudes. These muck, certainly.
-So be a clean hermit in a clean cabin? Like, totally alone?
-That’s the way to do it.
-Can I make it Disney, with racoons and rabbits coming for
din-din? And Bambi making goo-goo eyes?
-We’re getting far afield!
-Nice country around there, and all the people warm--if not
necessarily spotless.
-You’re simply not one for Thoreau then?
-He lives in a book.
