Serving Each Other On Appletree Lane
Delilah Stebbins loved hearing her
morning bird sing.
Distant, but lovely.
She listened to birds on the net,
but never could identify the species.
“You always wanna find out too much!”
remarked her mother.
Since his accident on the railroad,
Bill Hye couldn’t sleep but a few hours.
His "hobby" consisted of a 6 AM rub of
a wet cork on a glass.

Rhetting Up*
*Pennsylvania Dutch for Neatening
-I don’t sleep well because I’m not tired
when I go to bed.
-So, work a little!
-I do. That is I rhett up from time to time.
Just enough so a friend might not say
“Christ! What foul wind sped through
this dump?”
-That should fatigue you somewhat.
-It does, but the rest is merely trivial shit
and worry.
-You need a girlfriend. She’ll heighten
the experiences just described.
And exhaust you otherwise.
-Which otherwise?
-That question is indicative of more serious
trouble!
-Just teasing is all!
-And THAT, further...!
-I know. I’m a bundle of complexes, and what I don’t have you’ll donate as a form of weird charity.
-Why can’t you just be like me?
-Everyone’s most important question!

Ending Sleep
Since fully 70% of the working population
had ceased sleeping, Republicans have pushed
for a 12-hour workday.
Those workers who have gotten so hyper
so as to frighten their family have been
prescribed Golden Gophers, severe
downers from the University of California
lab, the same that invented NoSleepEver.
Come aboard! beckons the National Bureau of
Health TV ad, showing a gleeful train running
by graveyards, celebrants singing at the top
of their lungs and passing around trays
of food.
“Why snooze away a third of your life?”
actor Marcus Headly resonates near its close.
The swift train dopplers as we no longer see it.
Then, Marcus repeats.
Thus it’s all doppler.
