Living in America

-One shortwave station broadcasts only numbers.

-Not my idea of entertainment.

-CIA, I’m guessing. Hear your Operator ID,

and then the numbers following are coded
instructions.

-The bad guys must listen in an attempt to

crack the codes. So, lots of nonsense gotta
be sprinkled in.

-There’s always nonsense.

-What a laugh! Does it make the world go round?

-Not quite, but adds to the richness of all chords.

-We can’t exist without insane fools?

-Amen!

Taste In Everything

-We still pouring boiling coffee on him?

-His religion forbids in any form.

-That may be, but if you’re on the next shift,
one sugar!

-You gotta be MC, next banquet!

-I’m not funny. Life is.

-Both!

-But listen, Ludge, Sumatran Elite? Employees buy the coffee around here and...!

-You want Safeway generic?

-Hell yeah!

-Remember, Jerome, it’s our country we’re talking about here!

Honors and Family

Highest award in the Agency. And, as you might guess,
hush-hush. The President, of course, approved, and
Dr Anknul said to the few present, “Without this Operative,
there’d BE no Zendenistan!”

The following morning, Hannalore had already left for
meetings, and Ricky tossed something onto the pile of trash
overflowing the plastic barrel, screaming “Zach, you got two
minutes to leave for swim practice!”

He appears! Disgusting, yet alive, and they're departing.

With keys.

Bus for him.

“Trash?” he reminds!

“You handle it, Spy-Man!”

Zach adds, gobbling a Pop Tart, “You’re lucky we don’t piss on it!”

CIA Conversation--Imagined, Naturally

Levers of Power Regarding Levers of Power

-His governance mode is screaming.

-That's one in that part of the world.

-Aides so terrified they do nothing.
The tribes take that as carte blanche
to murder each other. Outside groups
send in suicide bombers as frosting
on the cake.

-Is there a central opposition?

-Woman. I know her. Powerhouse of ideas
all over the map. Nobody regards her
seriously.

-If a teacher, she couldn't get tenure, huh?
That type? Intellectual and incompetent?

-Most of the newer leadership we deal with.

-Well, let's stop with him. Push for elections?

-Not in the Constitution.

-What? We wrote it?

-Right-wing college boys and girls did when they
were shoved in there. So frantic with John Galt’s
Utopia, they brushed a few minor things off.

-Next move with...?

-He goes!

-Exile I like immensely. No real fallout.

-I was thinking that one to heaven, to cavort
with virgins.

-Approve! Get it done.

-Within the quarter-hour!”

-How could you...move that fast?

-By moving fast beforehand. Excuse me
while I answer this call.

-You’re excused, and if that’s all...?

-He’s out of our hair forever!

-Impossible!

-I told you. In the works already.

-I...don't know if I like that.

-Initiative.

CIA

“We found stupid the best cover. Send a rep
for Midwestern locks or something into a
European city. Business man! Yeah!

“Solid?”

“Well...semi-solid.”

“Yuz intrigues.”

“Both patriot and half-inane righty--working
further in the acting department. And just a
whiff of racism. No over-doing.”

“American Exceptionalism then?”

“You got it! And before it assumed flavor of the month.”

Seedy Bond

One of those higher chains where the furniture waxed,
and the food matches.

"Tell Ed..." begins the older man.

"that the gray goose is dead," adds the younger.

The former's next whispered line gets stepped on by a woman
in a dress hugely flowered. She hears acutely, a family trait.

"Count feathers for a bed," he almost gets out as she blurts
"Espionage!"

Both men laugh. Nervously. The older softpedals: "Just a folk
song, Ma'm."

They leave shortly, separately.

The younger texts midwestern.

The older answers lard.

The Essential Where

Three Poor Old Things Orient

1 knows she's in Cocoa Beach, Florida,
but can't convey same.

The words bump and jam. When she can finally get
something out, it snaps in frustrated anger.

2, old traveler, prefers London, Paris, Rome.
The nurse taking her history can get her here, but
spottily. She codes TDD, for Tends to Daydream.

3 is everywhere and nowhere. She CIAs it.
Deepest secrecy required since you’re eyeing
her dollar store jewelry.

Big Wheel Keeps on Turning*

Look for a soloist,
find a chorus. Though

the song remains
traditional, entrenched,

despite the fresher
strains we release.

When we leave it
will stay, resounding

over mountains, boom-
ing down through valleys.

Composing, thus, their own paradox-
ically steady and improvisational
brand of music forever.
