Love and War
Gen and Austin pride
themselves on their
quirks.
Agreeing that two
neurotics
don't make
a true crazy.
But Gen has begun wondering
if they do.
Their last quarrel escalated
so, and the sex after was
rushed and awful.
Finally, Austin makes the
case for their sanity as
both refuse to die for the
“cause” in a war with
the dogpatch nation who insulted
our Executive and Congress.
Patriotism reputed to be
the last refuge of the scoundrel,
but our two
meretricious branches
cycling well past.

The Importance of Lists to Encompass
Life, Business, and Patriotism
Because of cyber panic, especially
fear of ransomware, CEO penciled
his new list on scraps of paper.
All these scraps lost, mislaid, something.
He remembered many points and told
his most meticulous VP.
Who relayed them in conference call.
Her demeanor even stranger than usual,
staff took the tone as sarcastic, and
disregarded everything.
Stock shot up!
Wall Street Nearly Confidential subjected
CEO to a near-endless interview.
“For all the wondrous machines,” Marcy
Marcy gushed in conclusion, “men and
women still have IDEAS!”
“From sea to shining sea!” CEO affirmed,
since 4 July approaching.

The More Things Change
-What you think of this New Right?
-Like the Old Version, they think that
cruelty is wit.
-Homeless and Unemployed a barrel of laughs!
-It’s useless to legislate for lazy crazies!
-WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR...
-Some.
-The fewer the better!
-Freedom!
-Means the freedom to buy what’s required.
-And if I require a Congressman?
-Go for it!
-Stepping over bodies?
-Never wear your good shoes!
-My sacrifice for Justice!
-How much can you afford?
-Plenty! I hold that Truth to be self-evident.
-Amen!
-Along with my dick!
-Are we reducing the Nation to your pecker?
-Love of Country is shown in many ways!
-And I thought you were just a thieving tax-cheating son of a bitch!
-Spell that P-A-T-R-I-O-T!
-Are we done here?
-Not till the prayer.
-Then I wanna look at the schedule.
-Yes! Let’s not miss the Reichstag Fire!

During the War
I fought on the Home Front,
chiefly by theft, bribery and
Black Market.
Patriotism was unpatriotic,
really. But never in words.
Having won, I realize the
Conquering Truth of our Bravery
in doing without occasionally.
Sacrifice, in short. For Nation!
Pride indescribable steels me now.

Conversation re Patriotism
-Even you feel a twinge at the ballpark.
The huge flag and the service men and
women manhandling it to cover the field!
Then a local person, not a real pro, singing
the National Anthem with gusto.
-Would be like cheering billionaires.
-Granted they’ve gone too far and we’ve
let them. Adjustments are beginning
to be made and...
-Playing into a stacked deck!
-Even so. Such an unstacking will take
some time.
-One gets only one lifetime.
-And we can never achieve Utopia in it!
So what?
-Only that we can’t put up with a phony one.
-We moved from that...or are moving.
-Oh well! You and I are throwing into the effort.
Not hanging back to make wisecracks. And that’s
enough for me to feel the twinge you speak of.

Game Day
The Stalwarts brought their patriotism
too far.
Instead of a flag covering the entire
field, one draping the entire stadium!
Down to the surrounding walkway.
Went well in rehearsals with dozens of
armed forces personnel holding it down.
However, game day proved windy, and the
uniformed handlers, stationed outside with ropes, couldn't control it.
Finally, just made an impenetrable lid over the
stadium, a giant sucking sound indicating
a seal.
Those from lower seats who managed to crawl out from under were purple-faced with exertion.
A few old men made it, and, unfortunately,
crapped themselves.
One of these, Professor Deltz, spat.
"Patriotism moved from being the last refuge
of the scoundrel to the main pursuit of
total fuckin incompetents!"
No one helped him because he stunk so.

The Future of Just About Everything
After the hockey game, jerseys
and girls hundred each.
We indulged. What else can we do?
Answered by Chips, whose uncle
had a book.
We gave the jerseys to the girls.
Always do the generous thing, no?--
noblesse fuckin oblige--and ported
to a place called Paterson.
A poem was named for it once, or
vice versa.
The girls had looked mega-cute, but
the book is boards, like. With paper
inside? French and Indian War. I kept
hitting it to change the topic, but
you're stuck with the one.
“Must be the only war the French won,”
mused Chips.
“Sachem is dying under the Eiffel Tower,”
I prompted him, “and Pierre, his noble
murderer in the American style, speaks.”
"Tough merde, mon ami."
We couldn't stop laughing.
All right, all right: babies! Wastrels!
Bums! The worst of everything and pretty
ignorant too.
Though I'd like to point out that we have many
degrees between us. Forgot most of the Majors.
The government put a limit on them, so we do
nothing now.
Live on the Dole, Pineapple!
Please laugh. We just die if people don't.
Gets too, whatchallit, existential!
Worry not of the Future of the Nation,
Messy Amis, because we're promised
jobs next year.
Forty considered a good starting age,
according to most Sociologists.
Hafta curtail the women then. Patriotism!
Well, it was great fun but it was just
one of those thongs.

Taste In Everything
-We still pouring boiling coffee on him?
-His religion forbids in any form.
-That may be, but if you’re on the next shift,
one sugar!
-You gotta be MC, next banquet!
-I’m not funny. Life is.
-Both!
-But listen, Ludge, Sumatran Elite? Employees buy the coffee around here and...!
-You want Safeway generic?
-Hell yeah!

Pope arrives in Fiat
Maybe our big shots could settle for Chevvies?
Nope. Caddys and Lincolns. Often in their monster
SUV configurations.
And reinforced, since Ay-rabs might plant roadside
bombs, or open up with AK-47s. Or both.
Why not opt for surplus General Patton Tanks?
Clank clank clank come our Public Officials!
Easy to get private money to pay.
Can still have Patriotism when expecting a little back!

The Fill-In
I breezed through the form, but what the hell!
You could put anything down!
Check Chinese and nobody cared.
Married, Single, Divorced? All three. In glee!
As always, a combination of chaos and
precision:
Since they proved crazily fussy about 14B. A large
blank you had to fill in border to border. With what?
God knows.
The question varied. Mine, this time: How far is up?
Not intended to necessarily elicit a scientific
answer, but tap your psyche in some way. I wrote
of a trip to the shore with my elderly parents.
Wrong! The woman waved her wand and it
blinked red. So...again.
No soap either with How many make anything else?
I detailing the articles in my right pocket.
The woman eventually gathered her personals
and closed up. I was still her charge, so she
led me to her crisp little apartment in the same
building.
Only a short passageway, but it took some time
because of a ranging limp that grazed both walls.
In that cozy domain, over Stouffer's Microwave Lasagne,
I first noted how terrifyinging ugly she was.
But before you say anything, I'd give King Kong a run
for his money.
She eventually produced pajamas that’d fit him!
I swam in them. And out.
England expects each man to do his duty!
I’m always okay with that. You pick the way
to show your patriotism. Still a free country.

Buying Time
from the Plaza’s stones. I strolled through
a wedding last week. Bride,
cream-ivory-white, her attendants peaches!
When the sun slid from
clouds, the effect was brilliant!
can Mars rest?
out required suicidal patriotism for a bit.

Trains Leaving Stations
When Patriotism Pays Off
-The Democrats steal the tickets,
but you Republicans steal the train!
-Our Patriots have gone one further
and stolen the stations.
-All to no avail, you're so incompetent
that no trains run!
-Be one tomorrow taking the kids to camp.
-The Fascist Indoctrination Express?
-We like to say Cho-Cho!
///
Mars Mafia
-THAT train has left the station!
-Thus have I lost the argument to
your brilliance! But let's leave
genius for everyday. Not a real
train has run for a year!
-And you thought the Democrats were
incompetent!
-Well, you've been so hellbent on Privatization
elsewhere, you've neglected the practical.
Can't you reward your patriotic crooks and
still run a train from time to time? I go to the
station every single day in hopes.
-And if we get one to you?
-Regardless of destination, I'll take it to the end of
the line. There to meet some Melody, in a shaft of
light cutting through the rubble and bombed-out
buildings.
-She must be a blond. They show off better in
shafts of light.
-She is, and we shelter in each other's arms!
It's truly wonderful.
-Let her have it! She's dying for it! The Romance
Shit is just that.
-No hurry.
-But there is! We start rebuilding soon.
-You could make it sooner if you stuffed more
money in your patriots' pockets.
-Everything in measure to build the Shining
City on the Hill!
-Melody and I might want a studio apartment.
-Hundred G's upfront!
-Though the war is over, it’s still the Mars Mafia.
-That’s a constant!

Aiding an Other
“You got the world on a string, Carlos!
Unfortunately, it's a greasy one!”
Glenda's last remark as she embarked
on a sales trip.
Puzzled, he asked Monette. "Oh she's just
Othering. It's what we do to those not
True-Blue American Idiots."
“But I am! A citizen!”
“Just a fact. We're talking about perceptions.”
“Well, how do I...?”
“Listen! For a start, go to the football game
tonight with my brother. He's a Uniformed
Fireman. Helps carry that humongous flag.
Covers the whole field! With soldiers, sailors,
cops, those patriotic by profession.”
“And me? Great!”
“Well, not exactly, uh, across the field for you.
You'll be a Flag Wrangler, dragging it off the
truck with other Others, wrestling it through
the gate, unfolding the whole massive thing
for the washed ones to get under it. Hoist it.
March it billowing out. Ah!”
"Washed-unwashed? You're starting to sound
like Glenda!”
“You're not a Spick Terrorist are you?”
“Monette! I trusted you!”
“I'm sorry. Just a brief fit. It’s in the genes!”

The Drunk and the Congressman
-Instead of spending billions to go into
a country to destroy it, and then even
more billions to rebuild it, why not...?
-Just not go in at all?
-Too much common sense?
-One way to put it. But our contributors have
fingers in the pie. And need the other hand free
to salute.
-Patriotism and mega-cash?
-That’s it! Show Business–-no business like.
-Hey! I’M the bitter souse here!
-Move over!

Practicing Cynics
-But I’m not Jewish!
-I get it. We start with the punchline! Then safari
back through your whole range of ethnic
prejudices to ascertain just what you are.
-I love this game! And you don’t shoot any little
bundles of electrons representing aliens. Or sell
off those parts of Atlantic City not occupied by
glitz-seedy-boffo casinos.
-Do I ask questions? Is that the drill?
-You can. Or I can give a patriotic speech?
-How much will you take not to?
-What has ruined Patriotism in this country?
-Patriots. So-called. Or self-designated.
-The trouble is all the little pissy wars! We need one
we can sink our teeth into. A big one with arty posters.
-It’s not a real war without them. They rally one!
-Loose lips sink ships!
-You’re Hungarian!
-How did you know?
-The hot way you embrace dead concepts.
-You’re amazing!
-I’m about to exhibit modesty. Now THAT’S amazing!
-We had gotten far off the topic, and then...!
-Amen amen I say to you...
-that if a man gives a fish to another man, well what
good is that?
-Uncool.
-But if he LEARNS to fish!
-Then he can also learn to love minimum wage with squat benefits.
-There’s the patriot we’ve been seeking! But, not now! I’m busy dreaming of shoving rich people through eyes of needles.
-I, as God, will bless you!
-Don’t bother! You’ve been a disaster for me!
-You expect too much! I’ll put my batting average against anyone’s!
-Well, I’d never sign you. Too much baggage.
