Solo
The Group
We're called a group, but we're six to eight individuals.
We might meet daily or not.
Each time we do, one person speaks. That's it. No responses, no questions. This odd rule evolved.
We found discussion got us nowhere.
The rest of the time we're in little offices or walking about the estate.
I don't know where any office is except my own. I never see anyone when I walk.
Loneliness seems a necessity. But, I wouldn't call it loneliness since we're all so busy.
Do we solve problems?
I guess that's what we do, but they’re not given us.
We find them.
Well, Life of the Mind. Pretty flat affect. I'd like to give you evidence of messy personal lives, but don't know enough. Anyway I doubt it.
I wouldn't bother writing about us. It's useless. Even fiction has to start with something.

The Organization
-What am I to think in this tank?
-It'll come to you if you're really in the tank.
-A benchmark or two wouldn't hurt.
-What our benefactors do is sacrosanct.
-You mean even if their products kill?
-Especially then. You are to make
coherence out of greedy chicanery.
-Pays reasonably well. Many have put kids
through college with lies.
-We're building towards a philosophy,
of course. A systematic program to be
taught at universities.
-My strength is writing. I can write
the basic tome for such and...
-Forget it. We'll bring professors
on board then. They'll 180 for cash.
-Then I can fictionalize the principles
at that point. Knock three inches
from the thickness with some drama!
And the film will out-Fountainhead
The Fountainhead for the unwashed!
-No matter how thin or thick you slice it,
it’s still baloney!
-Is sarcasm the lingua franca of this institute?
-Of all haters.

How To Survive in Washington
First, apply to Think Tanks. If
one despises your advocacy, then
submit the few temperate
passages you've written. You
may even be invited on a panel–-to be
sandbagged by wits of bent dimension.
If in the audience with other
intellectuals, ask questions
with extensive prefaces which
prove you're smarter than experts
on the dais. All the exercises, any-
way, intending to straighten out
the Administration with rigors
of Right or Left glimpsed
through rhetorical fog.
There's always lunch, subsidized
by rail-headed billionaire hogs.

The Think Tank
I’ve invented a think tank
to award myself prizes. Oh,
I’ll reward others consonant
with my philosophy: Best
stated as Muscular Christianity.
Always attacked thus
always attacking!
Founders foresaw blood, and us.
We scan the Constitution as
a document of continuing rage
in the service of God.
