The Man Who Put Everything

in Impeccable Order

has it all go bust
one Summer day.

It’s still and hot
and he grieves
in icy sweat.

Concludes, rightly, that
he’s a born Snicklefritz.

But, what can be done?

Letting go of the microscopic
as an initial try.

He does this, and his breathing
improves. Been holding his
breath in fits and starts

for many years.
Great progress, really!

Then...Gretchen...

a disaster to both organized
and scattered, she shreds

BIG PICTURES!

As a result, he Snicklefritzes
everything! She, endlessly
amused. He

has done the world a favor tak-
ing her! (Three men contemplated
suicide. A fourth stopped play-
ing with himself.)

A monument to him might
someday be erected...
or erased.

At uncertain time.

Irredeemable place.

The Strangeness in Her Smile

Greta nearly threatened Rupper with her
magic. Not much of a threat since it
mostly focused on insuring Good Luck.

He left anyway. Bearer of multitudinous
maladies, many real, he went to live
with his sister and brother, both single
physicians.

After a year’s hit and miss relationship,
Hinton moved into her condo. A Boeing
engineer, he laughed at any mention of
magic. “Doesn’t fly!”

To avoid his sarcasm, she kept her
various strategies to herself.

But he discovered the mildest. She had
found a bright penny many years ago
and kept it in her mailbox, sealed in
a transparent little bag such as
watch repairmen use for tiny screws.

He had a key to the mailbox and was
surprised to find it there, as he was
the reminders she wrote to herself.

“For mail, US Mail!” he spat. But

everyone in the condo association
had other uses for it too.

“Lax everything around here!” As if
such habits ruined the world all
by themselves.

Hinton gave her the identical, blessedly
compact, lecture he had given his mother.
"The Rational Is My Magic God!”

Overkill for her small ways.

She soon kept an internet printout
in the mailbox.

How to help your husband’s job reward
him without question.

No worry: written in a secret language.

The one spell there she preferred
translating into English.

Mostly because the last word,
Hullmists, had such agreeable
sibilance.

And if she lingered over the m,
too, a resonance that vibrated
her for hours.

A few month later, Hinton
announced his promotion.

“That’s because you know
literally everything!”

True enough, but her Mona Lisa
smile knew something also.

Two Families

-My side: Order, Checklists, a Plan!

-Hers? and I wince asking.

-Last-minute clusterfuck with everybody screaming!

-What can you do when thrown in with them? Calm them somehow?

-Start screaming too!

-Is that why they like you?

-I believe so. I also can do a split! Observe!

-Jesus!

Englands Expect Every Man To Do His Duty

“Fighting the Last War”

Following that logic,

Going back,

And back,

To the beginning,

It's the same war.

So? We’re similarly

Regular

Elsewhere.

An art, really.

Though the “women”

Always persist

In falling apart.

Order

He sits in the clearing apologizing to The Moon Goddess, her light made jagged by the clutter where materials from
The War Dance have been abandoned.

Nooka-nooka he pronounces. Then just moves his lips
knowing that the evil spirits still hear. The new dancer playing
First Chief had left out the end of the dance where he should stomp into the five recognized directions screaming
nooka-nooka!

In a vision, the new Chief informs him, "Yeah, we got rid of the nooka-nooka shit. First of many."

The party noise swells from the cove beach and then stops.
"All passed out!" he explains to The Moon Goddess, but she has departed.

Soon, Qua'wie will sweep the clearing with a palm leaf.
As he has for sixty years, even during typhoons. But first they will put the dance artifacts back into the ritual hut, an exact prayer for each.

He invokes Pei-o the comedic Chief of The Second Period
singing Be cheerful and stupid. And wait.
