Deep Nitwittery
-Forgot day of week!
-That Altzy?
-Did in my 30s too. So...been gone since then?
-What the hell IS today anyway? THURSDAY? No kidding? What happened to Tuesday and Wednesday?
-What did?
-Some god’s in charge of fucking us both
up with time.
-Yeah? He’s still going strong!
-I...didn’t expect to MUTUALLY disintegrate!
Tragic outcomes being strictly solo? America
being romantic that particular way.
-And therefore Literary? Then, why does it
feel like everything else?
-Never ask that question?
-Why not?
-It’s profound! Thus leave you your
very self in the process!
-I can breathe again!

The Essential Romance
Italian Farmhouse Restaurant
long past the quake, buried still.
A place of dust and Heys! above.
Slashing flashlights, then...
fewer. Trucks
up and down rubble
hills, their exhausts
in red rear lights
adding to the phan-
tasmagoria. The dogs
moving elsewhere
through red dust.
The two of us two meet
far from any center,
where I complete
his proposal,
she accepting for
the dead woman. We
toast the happy pair
with champagne
against that farthest glow,
our eternal friends.

“Life’s a mystery!"
maintains Stelly’s younger sister.
“Hey!” Clifford laughs, “you just
find your moral and economic
niche.”
“How about Love?”
“Might arrive. Fifty-fifty.”
“I won’t live in a Fifty-fifty world!”
“It’ll care and won’t care.”

Least Stage
“Oh Rensselaer!
You’re so polytechnic!”
Thus was I defamed
among his lesser turns.
I wanted him killed off in
The Great War, but our frame
proved skirmish only,
where many were chosen
but few called
to any duty save
money grubbing.
Necessary always though
hardly the stuff
of Romantic Legend.
We died,
and that’s always a moment,
but I’d be hard
put delineating others.

Hath Charmin
-I keep the music at a moderate level in the apartment,
but it’s always louder in the bathroom.
-Natural resonator. Small. Network of pipes.
Even the toilet, save when you clamp your
capacious ass over it!
-How long have you been a Romantic?

Surveys present the same old story
of love and glory. Not.
Romantics prefer rot.
Which is peachy
if lovers asundered then
by war or natural disaster.
So we can admire them set
in alabaster, dimmed by
our human tears. Though, mid
reality’s hardware, husbands
precede wives in the trudge
throughout Home Depot.

Tchaikovsky
Was Peter Ilyich
a sexy sonofabitch?
Cashing in his chips
to mask a fatally queer mess?
Or did he swig–-more likely--
polluted water? Oh well, booze
and nicotine and compulsive
wandering rip in. Plus what is
noted depression today. And,
oh yeah, he wrote music
that one critic quipped
held stink you can hear.
That latter more often closer
to roses--and applause. So, on
balance, a surpassing romantic
composer. As for all the rest,
who has a skin thick enough?
God rest him
all road ever
he offended.

Romantic Overtones
How some find Lady of

Lucy in the Sky, but I get
Heather of the Interest Rates
imploring me to press “1" now!
