After the Final Convulsion,

the King fled.

There followed Emperors,

each more decadent

than the last. Culminating

with one enamored of making

the Nation into a beloved Circus.

The girls felt pretty in

their spangled tights, and

the men shot from cannons,

despite singed eyebrows,

enjoyed the trip.

But the clowns

got handguns.

Round and Round

National Review assembled the usual righteous circus to whip Trump round the rings. Much cackling. Unearthly, somehow.

Why won’t he leave? This, the last possible humiliation! Midst the Sawdust Hell of True Believers!

The trick ponies. Seedy costumes of sliding glitters. Rising dust in the tracking spotlights. Manure.

Buckley and I lived in New Haven at the same time, me a townie
without a fake Oxford accent. (Was OK, most Yalies spoke that way.)

He went on to be a great political entertainer, like Reagan and Goldwater.

If there’s a Right Hereafter...well, sadly, how could there be?

Yet Another Take on Modern Life

Commercial Director

-Get me the ugly little broad with
the enormous ass!

-Again?

-I like her! Doesn't turn all Betsy-Wetsy
when I scream.

-Do you care about the product this time?

-Never. All the same.

-Well, some background anyway: Whole Body
Makeup applied with a shovel. She punches
men before she discovers it, then gets all
fluttery-buttery and flirtsy-wirtsy after.

-Another Commercial Miracle!

-That latter part softens her image, though.
Her agent might not like...

-Hey! Like, dislike! That's the old rhetoric!
Each person a circus today.

-And if Madame Za-Longa is shot from the
canon and freezes mid-air?

-Crank her to the target or we all starve!

Big Tent

Trying to Understand: Budge and Hexler

-I never said the Republican Party didn’t have
a moral core-message!

-But...?

-It’s fatally undermined by charlatans and thieves.

-How about sex whackos?

-The worst!

-Can you have a traffic jam of clown cars?

-We’ll see.

When the circus came to Iowa

the truly sly performers
got roundly boxed
in the corn, which

waves when you
fly over, but exudes
a toxic dust on the ground.

Backstage

When the circus comes to New Haven’s
Arena, I get a high & oddly-angled seat
affording backstage views. Horses prove

bitten, their riding girls have costumes
often patched, panty hems digging
mottled flesh. Human Cannonball

climbs my stairs, glittering. Curtain swept
aside & there’s the gun! & he’s fired! Wow!

Actually a big spring performs the labor.
Gunpowder, stinks, smoke & concus-

sion for effect. Ah well, all backstages
everywhere, seedy, suspect, torn. So

what? For up front, under true &
proper lights, the whole show fuels
the necessary dreams of hicks.
