Bound
When Murphy Carker couldn’t
sleep, he instituted a rule.
These rules covered personal
and moral conduct mostly, but
some were financial.
Each forgotten upon awakening,
though a residue of calm remained.
Until it didn’t. He remembered one.
Now his life is chaos! Remembers
others, some in quite surreal form.
“I’m going nuts,” he confides in
Accountant Jerry.
“No you’re not. Clarity is hard.
Nobody ever achieved it easily.
Certainly not unconsciously!”
“You’re full of shit!” he informed
him, feeling it the first step back.

He knew his brain
a first draft
forever.
Unless...?
Hoped and prayed
this new woman
would put on
the adroit finish-
ing touches.
She did, to everyone’s
amazement
he became articulate,
even encyclopedic
after a while, and some
comments so pointed that
all his friends fled:
even sarcasm closed
to them by his flood-
ing words, damming
fragments of which
they still hear
in spasmodic dreams.
A woman’s voice,
clearly.

When Jonnies Come Marching Home
Nimbus
Girl dreams boy.
Boy dreams girl.
Sighs a’plenty.
Missing is glory. So
that’s catered by
literal war. Say,
maybe they’ll get
together after glow?
The pretty gimp
and the impotent.

Question For the Ages
Well, One
Do they disappear?
The unfinished
tasks in dreams?
You worked so hard,
but then woke up.
Perhaps there's
a repository, so
some person in Bangladesh
or Argentina checks one out
and commences on it. If thus,
something of yours actually
gets finished. Hallelujah!

Getting somewhere?
-Dreams turn the locks we fear.
-Uh huh. Well I had the lost one again. The familiar grid
and sights, and yet I'm queasy throughout.
-Who are the messengers?
-You can call them that. They're just there.
-What're they like?
-Extremely affable.
-No wonder. Because of their job.
-Which is?
-To lead you to another dimension.
-Oh? How came you by this intelligence?
-By feeling.
-Yeah, that stuff which leads to shit?
-Not this time.
-Besides, how do I know they won't trap me into
that bourne from which no traveler returns?
-You're here now, aren't you?
-Gave me a raincheck.
-Nonsense! In the next dream you might
achieve the dimension and check another out.
-Can't wait.
-But you must, for walking life is not a dream, really.
-Oh I don't know. Just one of your dimensions too?
-You're getting there. A truly future being. And past
and present, too. All simultaneously.
-Don't tell my mother.

It's Three O'Clock In the Morning
and I've danced
the night away
with whatsherface.
Not. Actually
up to urinate.
Quite okay
for one my age.
Besides, weirdest
dreams knock
round the 2d shift.
Meshuganing lock-
step life.

Actually Had a Dream About Interpreting Dreams
Neat fellow with spade beard there. Let's call him Sigmund, who asks
-Does z’emphasis on zexuality disturb you?
-Makes me squirmy. But that's okay since it's just a part.
-Who says dis nonsense! Merde! “Everything!” you don't understand?
-I don't really have to talk to you. Most clever people today have assigned you to the dumpster.
-Vot ist dump--?
-Dust bin.
-I’ll speak God! Plagues! Job had picnic, believe me!
-Wow! Is there a lot of revenge in the profession?
-You can't know half, Dummkoph!
