Tasked
Help to drag
the bodies out
after the quake.
Show whatever
love we can in
such travail.
Who knows
what still
they hear?
What cells per-
sist within
all crushed,
wretched things.

Oration
Judith is terrified about speaking
at the funeral. Stage Fright!
Even if it’s hers.
It’s ridiculous that the funeral directors
insist that since Rejuvs had to die in order
to be brought back, therefore...
But, LOBBY-Fever-AMERICA! grips!
Everywhere. Always.
(At any rate, the 80% Absurdity Index holds
steady in most fields.)
Longgggggg-time boyfriend Reck laughs,
“Hey I’m on my fourth life, each one
too fast I grant you, but I’ll bullshit any
group anytime.”
“It’ll kill me!” Judith all but sobs.
“Death figures of speech, and humor
are so Yesterday!”
“Bring it back!”
“Come on now, Honey! I’ll help you rehearse.
Not too egotistical to say nice things about
Judith 1.”

Machines Handling Rebels
“I rather think I'd like to die!”
He was shushed, with everyone pointing
out the cameras and listening devices.
"You will make your jokes, but, don't
worry, the robots can pick up sarcasm."
"No sarcasm!"
"Even THAT statement is!"
"The rest of you live in misery with lousy
meds treating incurable diseases. All to
prolong, indeed never end, what is laughingly
called Life!"
All the machines screeched into red, spinning-
light mode.
Then the one-hour lecture as to everyone
wanting to move here. Where we had fulfilled
the dream etc.
But he still wouldn't shut up and twin robots
came for him.
Being led away, he cried. "Do your worst!
But, that must be life and not execution.
Therefore do your best!"
One robot said to the other that this rebel had
lost it! The other one said they'll take him to
the island.
Lectures will play in continuous loops.
Ten to twenty simultaneously.
And patriotic songs.
All in the defunct stadium. Enveloped by a huge flag--originally one of a corporation.

Cats Don’t Die
We do because
we have rules.
And rituals.
They have none.
A spiritual anarchy
enables them to
live forever.
You point to Cleo
in her Birkenstock box.
The dirt and pebbles
You thudded on it.
Just Imagine
the thunder in
tiny ears! Most
likely her take
thereafter, a slow,
sarcastic burn.
Contact her
again? Never get
through the scorn.
Another cat guiding?
No deal, since
it’s Cleo: For
every cat you
attempt to pick
is her. Now,
every cat in
the world
isn't Cleo, true.
But you don't get
to really choose.
She doesn’t allow it.

When No One Goes
“Jeanette DIED!”
It's Clacky, and he's always EMPHASIS!
“What do you mean, died?”
“How...old...?” From Ancient Walter.
I didn't know really what that last meant, nor anyone else.
Finally, Mitz said “I...heard of people choosing it.”
“But why would anyone? Especially Jeanette!”
Nothing has ever left us so confused.
We had met daily up till then.
It became sporadic after, and then ceased
altogether. The various electronic ways
kept us acquainted. But they acquired a
robotic feel.
“She was always drama!” Bob did conclude on his
continuous blog. “She’d never want to stop that.
I just don’t get it!”
So we all chipped in to bring her back!
The Retriever an odd one to put up with, but it's
actually going well. Though, of course, they stretch
it out to charge us more.
So, another hundred from each, and Hops finally explodes
with “The more things remain the same, the more they change.”
He’s always ass backwards,
Didzy makes Jeanette a Forever Pudding. And we meet
just so she can show it. Will last until she's finally back!
“I'm so glad. I hurt her fifty years ago, and never really
fixed things up.” Thus, Krell broods. His way.
“What's a year?” All the young people want to know.
We tell them to not bother.

Rocco and Jimmie Various
ROCCO
So what’s the latest, Jimmie Various? Novel? Short...?
JIMMIE
Travel essay in anthology. I scope out a few small highways
through the people alongside.
ROCCO
Could be pretty good.
JIMMIE
Times critic sniffs "The LAHST piece deals with quite minor
American roads."
ROCCO
Well, he didn't say they should’ve stayed that way!
JIMMIE
Might as well have.
ROCCO
If you were a horse, be said: "Jimmie Various also ran."
JIMMIE
That’s me all right. I wouldn't mind just being quoted a bit.
Like, my words count.
ROCCO
You’re after immortality and it keeps receding
the more you trudge.
JIMMIE
Look at Catch 22. It's said in every language of the world!
ROCCO
Yeah it is. But that’s because of its thumpingly insane atmospheric. That’s the writing part.
JIMMIE
I'll take anything I can get.
ROCCO
Then pay attention to Yeats. Didn't he say something like you ought to be satisfied to distract a young girl with a poem?
JIMMIE
Mine have distracted, I suppose.
ROCCO
Why isn't it enough? A lovely closes a book of your verse
and says That's just beautiful!
JIMMIE
Well, I’m not writing here! That’s for sure!
ROCCO
Maybe when you're shoving up daisies in your impatient
ghinny way, you’ll think about what I’m telling you.
JIMMIE
I will. Thanks. I’ll slow down the shoving up.
Mid poseurs, Rocco encounters a real writer in South Philadelphia.
