Neighborhood Softball League
A few girlfriends straggle in and
sit on the squat bleachers.
No wives yet.
They steer away from the old
sobbing woman.
“I’m dying of Cancer, and nobody
gives a shit!”
First Baseman, Hutsy, gives her
his chocolate milk.
“I need a straw!”
“Nobody needs a straw. Chug it
right down!”
“I’ll try.”
“You need a laugh? Watch me bat.”

Reaction Time
Philora
Thereafter we used Philora as a shorthand
indicating any Apeshit Fit over a trifle.
They never disappointed.
Ora, unfortunately, unchattered by
some express train of a Big C.
Departed, she, six months.
Phil grew morose.
But enter Betty!
Corn On the Cob and Apple Pie wholesome!
Calming all around her. Cow-eyed Goddess!
He returns to panic mode nonetheless.
She is rereading her pile of Alfred Hitchcock
magazines.

Siege
-Of all the men!--so called.
He sticks!
-Well...he was never inept
in the romance category.
-Just all others.
-He drives me to chemo.
And is moving in here,
no ifs ands or buts!
-A team?
-Yeah! Would you believe it?
-(sings) They keep their girlfriends
warm at night.
-He does that. And right now the...
-The most important thing on
the face of the earth is staying
alive!
-It's...a mean face!
-But you still like hanging around it.
-Things I haven't done yet, and I
don't even know what they are.
-You will when you do 'em.
-By the way thanks to you too for...
-Sticking since the sixth grade.
-Mr Ferris!
-Just needed one little push to
a nervous breakdown, but we
relented.
-Saw him at Jiffy Lube before
Mr Big C smashed in on you here.
-Did you apologize?
-Sorta. But he said he loved every
moment of it.
-We did some good then! How come we
thought the opposite.
-Because we're assholes.
-Are we now?
-No time.
-That's the big word. How much left!
-Come to lunch Saturday. He's planning
something.
-He cooks too?
-Didn't you know? Hotel Chef.
-Maybe you already died and went
to heaven.
-Let's avoid that luck.

Kevin and Kevin
K1
We’re a hetero couple having
the same name.
K2
We write about our gang.
***
Glib Death
Only a few seniors in the gang,
and they speak glibly of death.
“I’ll be pushing up daisies by then!”
“When I got outa my car, the door
hit a guy in black carrying a sickle.
Convinced him got the wrong guy.
Won’t work next time!”
More of the same. Not clever,
but lively.
Doc Andy says they’re really scared.
A Podiatrist, and the feet far away
from the brain, we know, but...he
has something.
...
Decisions etc
Lutzy decided! Moderate version
of the Hallelujah Chorus please.
Stow that since he as quickly
UNdecided.
His partner, Mark, going bananas
in this regard.
What the hell! Some of us brood
to produce an uncertain egg,
others talk...and talk...and talk...and...

Big One
Monette obsesses about Cancer.
She knows she has it though all
tests negative, and googles its
various forms and treatments daily.
"In Montreal , now they have a
huge machine that...chemo,
radiation."
Oh well! All of it.
Her boyfriend, Murph-Mo runs limos
in Philly.
He transported the latest boy
band last week and bought her
their dvds.
She's already worried about
Little Jimmy who wears a sweater
in all their pictures because he’s
cold.
Maybe she'll knit him a warmer one.
Her obsession may be switching.
Turtle Neck. Icelandic Fisherman’s
style.
It's not brain surgery.

Conflict In the Cancer Ward
When The Wit passes,
the doctors and nurses become doubly
morose.
The new patient, Bertram Runcey
Carruthers, strict in life and worse
approaching death, wouldn’t say shit
if he had a mouthful.
“Oh Well!” from Head Nurse, Frederika,
“They also serve, etc. And, a little nobility
won’t hurt this time.”
“Fuck nobility!” counters assistant, Delsey,
too outspoken for her own good.
“You’re too outspoken for your own good!”
reminds Frederika.

Seasoned Medical Complaints
-(shouts) Don't say hello again! Put the phone to your good ear!
-Hello? Oh, I don't mean that. I'm hearing you loud and clear.
-Which practitioner are you complaining about today? Obviously
not an ear person.
-Never mind! I'm seeing the Cancer Impresario at four. I'll let
you know what he slices off with his laser.
-Can't wait. You know...even at your age people develop
interests, hobbies?
-I should fly little airplanes down Lincoln Road?
-Anything! Spare me the medical bore. On and freakin on!
-Hey! What can I say? It's my whole life!
-Why don't you have a party for the Big-C Billionaire, the Dermo,
the Dentist, the...
-I get the idea. But I'm not treating them, they're treating me!
-Humor! Lame, but valiant try from one nearly dead.
-All from Miami Beach, and I'm not even Jewish.
-Too bad. Then there'd be a tradition behind your abject misery.
A tremendous folklore from Russia and Poland. Artists who
translate tragedy to fiddles. And, add the thumping comedic
record coming down from the Yiddish theater.
-Okay! Okay! So there's nothing behind me except a succession
of sour and icy Puritans.
-Broke THAT tradition at least! You'll die doing it.
-As long as I can find it. I...tied a string!
-By God you’re laughing! Laughing!
-That's why I call you!
-I should go on the medical and psychiatric payroll.
-No room.
-I’ll serve for a dollar a year.
-Fifty cents!

The Romance Department
Very Short Exchange
-Mackey out playing with the toddlers, got
mud all over him. Came into the kitchen
to wash it off. Then, who drops by but the old
girlfriend! And bursts into tears at what Big C
has done to him!
-Yeah, it’s a shock. So what?
-They really still love each other.
-You women go for that love shit! They parted
in mutual hate way back when. So, put the two
states together for everybody’s usual average.
-Have I told you what a prick you are?
-Don’t hafta.
