The Professor At the Bar

-He grew up loving to laugh!

-Wonderful!

-But Life gave his laughter an acid tinge.

-Sad-bad.

-Died of an Acute Sarcastinoma!

-Never heard of one of those.

-They're all around.

-I must watch, uh...?

-whither thou goest!

-That too.

Men No Longer Young

-And for bonnie Annie Laurie
I'd lay me down and die.

-Isn’t that doun and dee?

-Speak English! Don’t add to
the problem!

-Anyway...we've said it.

-But he meant it!

-His problem. They’re only bonnie
for starters.

-And what are we for starters?

-Who gets to start anymore?

Deserving

-Then I married Trudy Trueheart.

-How’d that go?

-She became Flora Falseheart.

-Tragic!

-The girlfriends ran a bitter school.

-That was their role; what was yours?

-Always the same. I was born crooked.

-Like Original Sin?

-Like to think so, but nothing is original
with me.

-When you die they’ll screw you into the
ground!

-Save on coffin.

Doppelganger

It wasn’t “You really should meet X.
Looks just like you!”

We stumble into each other at a
railway station, both on hour delay,
big storm down the line. Have coffee.

“You have the same little scar under
left eye. Cherry tree branch in my case.
Snapped by a climbing companion.”

He doesn’t remember, or says he doesn’t.

We fit up other particulars as to taste in
food and other trivialities.

Is there a Rita to tear him to pieces?
I finally blurt.

Zoe, and not quite as serious, “But...a little
hyperbole?” he laughs at me.

“I catch myself sometimes too!” he adds.

Little time left, so he proposes that we learn
to think alike, compromise on Rita and Zoe.
Since he understates, while I...

Thus Rita catches a break.

I take his card, he mine.

“What a creep!” I announce to my private
compartment.

What Attitude Accomplishes

Pro,Tyro

-I shake my head!

-Seen you do that before.

-I'm not surprised.

-What does it signify, exactly?

-Nothing exactly. Only that something
quite bizarre has come down. Again.

-And also that you, the possessor of this
shaking head, are vastly superior to
it and everything else?

-Don't I wish? Whatever is wrong, I'm part
and parcel.

-Then, what can you do?

-Do?  Where did you get that naive notion?
I shake my head!

Damaged Goods Party

Not a dry eye in the condo when Exhibit A finished.
She had indeed been crushed, and now most of the
men wanted to marry her.

Exhibit B tried for the same piano keys, but brusquely,
hit or miss. We concluded her present tragic life had
taken on the grim and spastic melody it deserved.

Exhibit C was all mouth and revolt, excoriating anything
in trousers. We told her she missed the revolution by
taking so long to fix her face.

Exhibit D opted out for reasons of her own. I thereupon asked her to be a good little girl and fetch me a gin and tonic.

Experience

_____fantasized of the latest boy band. From among
Dinky, Rinky, Pinky, and Winky, she chose the last,
who actually winked on refreshing occasion.

She'd show him the ropes, she thought,
kneeling down to the lower shelves
in Walgreens Cosmetics.

So much more to offer than clustering fleas
with their prattle of hair and nails.

Whereas she was encyclopedic, and had oomph
they didn't know existed!

“You’d be lucky, Winky!” she whispers, rising to encounter the cleansers.

The Field

All this hue&cry
about the creds

of presidential
candidates! I can

despise what they say,
especially in truly base

utterance, but they’re
representative public
persons. Live with it!
