Power of One

The Woman Who Reversed Herself

drove the rest of us bananas!
Not a big deal unless she
maliciously fabricated,

attempting to destroy.
Otherwise, Cute.

Such a dilemma!

In Truth,
she made us so schizo

we had to admit it
to try retaining any vestige

of sanity. Our route back
to acknowledge how
freakin nuts we were.

We got there! It helped
she owed each money.

It also helped that she coyly
dropped US!

In an absolute fit
of creative lying!

Years have passed!
And one of our number
has accidentally met her.

Sawing to the rest that Butter
wouldn’t melt etc.

The inevitable, awful, negotiations
will estrange us

from each other fatally!
So, am I saying she will win?

Of course! Sorry, but you never, ever,
re-engage THE WHOLLY TOXIC!

Doorways

In the doorway of the abandoned
supermarket, he stood.

Having taken over from Greta and
Chuckie, struck down by a truck
mid foggy dumpsters.

In the opposite doorway, a dollar
store which still looked open,
the woman.

She spoke French, but only after
her companion, who had danced,
left.

Hokey brought Coffee and Sandwiches
daily:

“Don’t give ME credit. I just took over
from the Earlys when they moved
to St Pete.”

A high school girl came along one
day last week, and sang a piercingly
sweet Happy Birthday to the woman.

The man nodded to her after they left.

That’d do.

Puzzling Character

-No mystery here, believe me:
Think Crazy-quilt!

-All too much! Main threads being?

-Fear and lying.

-Falling into the male character then?

-Setting the hallmark!

-I think I recognize you. My first
husband!

-Everybody’s.

-Uh? Swinging just the ONE way?

-Moving with the times.

-A broken heart for every light on
Broadway.

-Not quite doubled my quota.

-One way of looking at you then:
ultimately just a crushed faggot!

-Nobody gets one way.

-30-

The thudding once
arriving and
you owe us

for the promises
we’ll keep for you.
Not all of course.

I see the bright
ones still undone

making you light-
hearted, finally

uncharacteristic, but
there we have it!

Spectacle

When the Combatants
stripped to Jockeys of an
off-white, uh, character,

Bucksy screamed “Clash
of the Titans!” But...another
anti-climax,  yet,  as

they collapsed crying in
one another’s real embrace.

Oh well, one shouldn’t complain since
the Present American Model is
Thief.

Two Characters

in search of a  Character.

-Every institution makes you lie.

-Always?

-Fortunately not.
Sometimes you can
assert CHARACTER.

-Insist on TRUTH!

-Unless you’ve lost it.

-So so many transactions ago!

The Man Who Avoided Just About Everything

MARRIED!

You'd think, then, the end of this
irresponsibility?

You'd be wrong. His wife went along,
only stepping in when the particular
case egregiously selfish.

As a result, he maintained about 80%
of his former avoidance.

You may surmise here that he lacked
character, for why not be mindful
of those who tackle those situations
he slides by?

So, others contribute to his luxury.

His shouldering friends often look
prematurely old and lost, as if looking
for something they forgot which.

I'm trying to get some guilt into
him here!

No use. Allow me this vulgarity:

He doesn't give a shit!

Co-Dependents

Marcie-Jen flat out lied!

Frequently challenged, she complained that people
painted her into a corner, thus forcing more lies.

“That much is true,” maintains our Elder One.
"You shouldn't show how clever you are by
trapping her."

“Yeah, first you should work on your own behavior
first!” That from Derrick, who never did. And fancied her.

He was warned away by the wise Elder. "Just don't depend
on her! Push will really really come to shove, and she'll
let you down by telling the truth."

“Then the truth will be a lie!” added Tess, who thought
that funny.

“We’re getting to something here!”

“Yeah, Philosophy!” Derrick spat. “No wonder I flunked it.
Religion too! Same teacher. A small college.”

Too many of those!  And we went off on Education, leaving
Marcie-Jen to lie as a lifestyle.

Old Program

1

Micksey was nice.

So much so that an attesting certificate--
all gold leaf, would not be out of place
on her efficiency wall.

Jean, leader of the pack, attempted
wising her up re men.

"Don't worry. I grew up with brothers
pulling on it morning noon and night.
So, I know sex."

She didn't.

Nor, really, did Charles. He dropped the
s in pronunciation, a la French.

So, an affectation. Let's not cast stones.

Anyway, equally as nice. One morning Georgie
and Melody woke to the sound of roto-tilling.

Charles doing the new garden plot at their
house. "I woke up early, so...why not?"

He was never mentioned without the adjective
lovely preceding.

What will you, alive, yet dead, in the ironic
frames of today, predict about these heroic
two marrying.

They toughen up in the terrific adjustment?

Uh uh. Become, instead, nasty as catshit!

Everybody avoided them.

Enter Dixie and Hal, dewy innocents.

Goto 1.

Professor

-What I thought and said then was
of that time. I'm different now.

-Well, however sliced today, your students
liked it then. A character!

-I just have ID to worry about presently.

-Identification?

-Impending Death.

-What's He like?

-Patient.

-Well don't piss Him off! I know you!

Deserving

-Then I married Trudy Trueheart.

-How’d that go?

-She became Flora Falseheart.

-Tragic!

-The girlfriends ran a bitter school.

-That was their role; what was yours?

-Always the same. I was born crooked.

-Like Original Sin?

-Like to think so, but nothing is original
with me.

-When you die they’ll screw you into the
ground!

-Save on coffin.

Murph’s Turf

-Well, we go coed next year! How am I...?

-To teach women?

-I’ve had such wretched luck.

-Oh, I don’t know, Bernice has stuck in there
and made you civil, if not civilized.

-She’s the Eighth Wonder!

-And! Your future resource when things get sticky.

-Will they? I’m worrying all the time!

-The Great Persona! The Character! The Legend!
Scholar, and brilliant and witty teacher! Jumps
into a pickup basketball game of students.
Is actually credible. Things heat up and he
exchanges four letter words! Whattaguy!

-All true, in more modest measure. Add ‘Walker
on Eggs’ now. I’ll prove more than cautious with
the young ladies.

-Be yourself!

-That’s looking for trouble.

-Hey! Don’t we all modify our acts as life wears on?
Why are you exempted? Well...you HAVE been.
A great ride heretofore!

-Retiring not out of the question.

-To what? Writing even more of those articles that seven
hermits in Iceland read? You’re a born teacher! Let ‘er rip!

-You give me contrary advice!

-Wait until the contrary sex gets ushered in!

-Harrowing image by itself! I’m doomed! It’ll lead off Action News.
Some stupid thing I say that forces every women in America to drop her Macy’s bag and man the barricades!

-You’ve deranged your mind with anxiety! Again, wait for the
actual girls. They don’t fall from some pure universe, instead
having angry and babbling fathers, and horny uncles.

-And boyfriends they’d like to kill?

-They won’t desire killing you. They’ll love you!  You really don’t
have a worry in the world.

-Easy for you to say!

-Evidently, nothing is, for you.

Events Converging in Time–-just about

Extremes

“You're adorable!--all caps, triple bang.”

Racky walks to the bus stop after leaving this new,
assertive proofreader at her Honda Fit.

He tells the bright dummies in the storefronts how
he's adorable, singing it finally.

From the opposite direction flies ex-girlfriend,
Estelle, fisting a paper that's both fault inventory
and manifesto!

Lit and Post Lit

Our Various
Characters

-Behind that gruff interior...

-lies a gruff interior.

-And that sweet little one hides a well of poison!

-Ouch! How come those we know don't conform
to the lovables of fiction?

-Or the hateables? Well, ours don't hafta sustain much
of anything. But the writers of magazine episodes had
that problem. Thus do the two-noters stay the course
rather easily: whore with heart of gold, tyrannical boss
who’s a softie, etc. As do one-noters, such as outright
villains preparing to brutally grip dewy maidens.

-Next month: FATE WORSE THAN DEATH!

-Probably not. Anyway, all the folks we know possess
several notes, quite often clashing. And few are
genuine villains.

-They're working towards it.

-Takes some competence.

-Then we’re safe.

 Singing About Nothing

It all came back to him now. Like Sinatra, Pippy had lived
a life that’s full—minus a few women.

Something of that feeling leads him to perform My Way at
the Kool Kup’s Karaoke Night.

Nothing could have prepared him for the wrath.

Highlighted by Yocko’s girlfriend, Big Boobs Gladys, as he
sings of travelling each and every highway:

“Yeah, on your knees!”

This proves chief zinger among many.

Yocko has already chimed in with “Your way? Everybody
else’s, more like!”

Even Silent Lucy sings her little parody in the space where
Pippy puts the mike down to sip a drink and light a cigarette,
a la Frank. “Regrets, you’ve had a million!”

He later speaks of his hurt to Other Harry, who snaps “Who
cares about what a buncha drunks thinks? Besides, it’s the
wrong crappy song for you.”

“What’ll I…?”

"Sing about nothing next time. Don’t make
yourself a target.”

Little Girl, Little Curl

Most especially horrid!
Meet with parents as their
experienced friend. Her

father for some punishment.
To his credit, not physical.

Withholding beloved chocolate
milk a week. Religo-Mom

for prayer, the intensity
of which points quietly

to goodness, or at least
relative peace.

I, in professorial guise,
submit a program
long and wise.

They object to its length,
which suggests even

greater doubt re
my reading children.

Short of it, we give up.
Victory for brat. Oh well,

that settled it then, queasily.
Fast forward twenty years

and she lives with cohort
of tantrum tossers. Boys too.

Drama has exhausted them
to zombies, though they

metamorphose each day
for business, and fake it

to make it. This goes unusually well
until excruciating scene disgusts

everybody. Prompting vacating from
latest victims by our own adult brat.
So? Can you spot one ask you?

Quite impossible.
They don't come
with timing fuses

like bombs in
bad movies.

Turn and Counter

Society proved cruel
to Jane Eyre. For return

she spent
honest toil,

fidelity, and
affection.

All awful coins.
