Bernice Made Lists

On her cellphone and
in her personal cloud.

All kinds, but her favorite
was of snide remarks directed
at her.

These never came from plumbers
calling Allied Supply, who
loved her sweet voice on the
phone.

But usually friends, so-called.

Under “My Best Makeup,” she

challenged Jen, who laughed.

“Don't be silly. I meant nothing!”

Of late, whole nations listed.

“I should warn Pakistan, who isn't

as organized as you.”

-Life is a dream...

some say.

-Horseshit peddlers! Row a
different boat!

-Hey! Go easy. I launched
similar-sounding malarkey
to get through college.

-To what end re adding
to the world's wisdom?

--Not my deal! Immediate
survival was.

From what? Floods? Hurricanes?

-The shit storms Society wishes
to smash you down with. Bury you!

-Paranoid now, it seems. I doubt
Society bothers with non-entities.

-I'm entity enough to myself and
my girlfriend!

-God have mercy on her souls!

Varieties of Human Personality

Brent Andrews didn't have
to labor very long to line
the closet with aluminum foil.

There he sat a few hours a day,
and felt stronger. So, avoiding
the rays important!

Mickey Karks laughed, ripping
down much of the foil. And
tearing off the closet door!

He stopped him too late. But
berated him. "You'll feel shame
someday! Not now, since you're
a cruel amoral pig!"

The pig continued laughing.
"Are you getting bombarded
again by all the raysie-waysies?
Might affect your balls if you
had any!"

Randolf Haker stopped in after
Mickey left.

To Brent, Mickey's sneer and middle
finger still imprinted the trailing foil,
but Randolf his equal self.

"We are forbidden to judge the stupid.
Leave him to Heaven!" On their knees,
they prayed as zephyrs from an open
window flashed them extraordinarily.

That evening, Jenny Toles brought her
clothes and hung them mid metallic shreds.

Brent tried on a sweater and tennis skirt along
moonlit dapples.

“I don't know if I like your doing that!” Her gray
eyes, though, always remaining kind.

“Whitman said I am all men and women!”

The Call (1 and 2 )

-Ashen? Shaken? You've gotten
The Phone Call!

-DID I? Every paranoid monster
shaken loose!

-You've gotten too close. He HAD to!

-I've...never gotten along with anyone
so well!

-Uh huh? Did you start thinking he
was queer? All that emotion!

-Not a bit of it!

-Well, that's his fear.

-Well, I'm, like, walking away and never,
ever looking back!

-Nonsense! He'll be all bear hugs now
and showing everybody how much he loves
you. In a manly, macho way.

-Now you're teasing.

-Friend for steadfast life, and I'm not kidding.

-Tearing and ripping to get there?

-Personality's a mystery. The more books
they write, the more mysterious!

---

-Look at YOU! Did you get the number
of that Mack truck?

-She phoned me at around 3AM.

-She seeks clarity at that hour.

-Even got around to Old World curses,
Gypsy, I think. Very imaginative, if grisly.

-Well, never mind! You graduated now.

Love-making from here on will shake your
very foundation!

-For how long?

-Usual is a year, but don't fret! She a marvelous
breaker-upper. It's like a seminar. She won't
go on until you thoroughly understand each step.

-Pandora’s Box, and then Super Love, and then...
quoting Professors or something?

-Life itself!

-Where can I opt out from ALL of it? With her,

with everybody?

-That's handled FOR you some future dark day.

-Can’t wait.

Dialog…somewhat

-The Vaginal-Probe, Fuck-Leroy-and-José
Party keeps a-wonderin’ how it lost.

-Oh yeah? Well I’m one of ‘em. You see
that hill out there?

-Could hardly miss.

-Well when waves of Josés and Leroys
start comin’ down it…!

-Waves of Josés has a ring.

-They’ll hear something like.

-Wave of women proceeding too?

-Probably. Some ones resembling ‘em anyways.
Biologically.

-Wow! That last word! Six syllables!

-Keep underrating us!

-That wouldn’t be possible. Uh, will I…
taste lead too?

-If you’re in the last wave. Liberals, Democrats,
Communists, Socialists.

-You left out professors.

-Same thing. And hey, for the spicks and blacks,
AK47’ll do just fine. For you and fellow pansies:
rocket launcher!

-Ouchie! But un-itch your finger. I won’t climb the ramparts to augment, or advance with, any of my types. Too soft-headed. They keep losing their keys, and the war won’t wait for hysterical searches!

-Stay on the sidelines then!

-I’m seeing wonders from here!

Another Doomsday Passes

with the stray tornado or so,
but space mountains fly past,
and black and brown waves don’t

materialize to ravage
Idaho hamlets--

preferring, perhaps, to rage
at the infuriating Lakers.

Thus, jumpy fingers need withdraw,
reluctantly, from trigger housings.

Black helicopters stay aloft, their
distinctly awful thrum-thrum

filtered out from government imposed
bedlam by those who’ve coyly

trained themselves. The Bushmaster,
proven adept in dismembering children,
leads the Hit Parade

of sales. Sensible folks tell us pay more
attention, be especially polite to paranoids

you may discover secreting among us.
No mystery who they are, though, for
they announce themselves on radio.

Present Tense

The charity trolls us with return address labels, but
of another couple.

We become them, very briefly. Buy a silly card
and send to a fictitious address.

Will be returned to them.

Are you worrying yet? We’re disguised and pay cash–-
a new bill--wearing the thinnest of gloves, which we
keep on while addressing etc.

Moisten flap with a damp sponge. So, all in all, no DNA,
stamp being self-stick too. Mail in an empty shopping
strip without cameras. Go home to shred the other labels,
flush them down toilet.

I bring the pen to work, wrapped in tissue. Shake it out onto
a desk in another’s cubicle after he leaves for the day.

A little fun! Yes! But shakily complex due to the age.

Case At Hand

-Country splitting into two psychological classes:
paranoids and those afraid of ‘em.

Strategies

Ceaseless hurts.
In rare instances
genuine.

But always
torrential.

Therefore you avoid,
seeking spaces free

of very probable
insanity.

When trapped, try-
ing the curt Hi,
must run!

The paranoid seething
tunes, you dance on
all occasions

away.
