The Fate of Some Quotes… & Odors

On Patrolperson’s Matty Early’s
first night she’s asked

Is it still the same old glory,
the fight for love and story?

“He had it bass-ackwards!”
she tells Shift Partner,
Jippy Erst after they book
the pie-eyed questioner.

“At any rate, it obviously
reeks of piss,” shrugs he.

“It’s bad enough to ever smell
it just a little off yourself!”

“Could ruin a lot of things,”
he nodded.

BALL

When we last moved, I went from a baseball team which seldom won, to one
most always did.

Countering tons of sheer American-Horseshit, neither place had any discernible effect on my character,
which alternated between timidity
and mindless brass.

My new First Baseman, JJ, stood for
no such alternation in himself!

Young Mr Perfect!

Soft, Super Polite, always the right words. I couldn’t be him to my shame, and

therefore couldn’t receive the neighborhood association
trophies he did.

Following season, SURPRISINGLY, considerably less of a paragon at First Base. The Swarthy One!

WHERE’S JJ? Moved? I ask him.

Yeah, to Convalescence!

Total Nervous Breakdown!  he went on,
and family has money.

What’s that? Total WHAT? ask I.

What you think it is.

Well...so...J Jreturns NEXT season.
Hairball departs.

Mr Perfect again at First Base!
Will he again go crazy?

Initial game back, extra innings
impinging twilight.

Becomes up to me to save it...ball
sharply bounding, I stretch, leap,
tumble in a cloud

of retching,
darkening dust.

SOMEHOW in my glove! Hop up,
throw to J, not my usual rainbow
arc, though, a laser!

Hey! So I’m the Hero this time and
not him!

I see that stitched ball spinning
very softly now...

so so
many years past...

Bright
above

and shadowed
under…

traversing
pain.

1 + 1 = 3

The Man Afraid of Everything
married The Woman, ditto.

Good! say you. Since one can
comfort when a true paranoid fit
descends upon the other.

Bad! say I.

Because of the math.

Here and Hear

-Everyone’s afraid, but I deal with it.

-Oh? How?

-By singing.

-Uh huh? Any type of…?

-All give form. Make you here.

-H--e-r-e  or H-e-a-r?

-Both.

-Do the words of the song help?

-They can.

-Inspire?

-Possibly, but...more the resonance
of the whole business.

-You as transmitter then?

-That’s the best.

Paying the Fee

or How a Huge Breakfast Saved Me!

but killed my parents.

...this last a sad tale dominating social
media, but most people had given up
the indigestible fiber toast responsible,
so the latest fear is dated.

But our most famous proverb lives still!
To live you must pay the FEE!

FEE=Fear of Everything Eventually.

Our pal, Murphsy, exempted by virtue
of having his yellowing hand on the
elaborate handle of Death’s Door!

Something he ate or didn’t?

The wrong pill?

Or the right one in excess?

Who knows?

But somewhere in the media flood
of medical disaster is an answer!

So, we pay attention and pass all
insane cues as to cures to our
dying friend.

Hey! Forget it all! Nation Day is
coming, our blowup, blowoff time!

When our conquerors thrown out
on their fat asses!

To hear them tell it, how they fled
incorrigible us.

What the hell! Most of us combine
the two unstable races.

Anyway, the clothing “fashions” this
year even more garishly tasteless.

Cost-saving for us, since we’ll
need them for Murphsy’s funeral.

80s Puzzle

In his eighties now, Hastor overwhelmed
by Crisis!

via persistent strings of them.

But, upon examination by his daughters,
none existed really.

“What will happen when a real one arrives?”
Melinda asked his medical team

Hoddings Destry Morgan Undervel, MD,
replied “Probably kill him.”

His partner-wife Rhonda Makepiece Louisa
Conchita Pepita Schwartz, MD, concurred.

Thus, keeping him alive consisted of laughing.

Which angered him.

How can such a conundrum end?

Who knows, who cares?

Once you find out what you’re doing,
you should always stop.

Varieties of Human Personality

Brent Andrews didn't have
to labor very long to line
the closet with aluminum foil.

There he sat a few hours a day,
and felt stronger. So, avoiding
the rays important!

Mickey Karks laughed, ripping
down much of the foil. And
tearing off the closet door!

He stopped him too late. But
berated him. "You'll feel shame
someday! Not now, since you're
a cruel amoral pig!"

The pig continued laughing.
"Are you getting bombarded
again by all the raysie-waysies?
Might affect your balls if you
had any!"

Randolf Haker stopped in after
Mickey left.

To Brent, Mickey's sneer and middle
finger still imprinted the trailing foil,
but Randolf his equal self.

"We are forbidden to judge the stupid.
Leave him to Heaven!" On their knees,
they prayed as zephyrs from an open
window flashed them extraordinarily.

That evening, Jenny Toles brought her
clothes and hung them mid metallic shreds.

Brent tried on a sweater and tennis skirt along
moonlit dapples.

“I don't know if I like your doing that!” Her gray
eyes, though, always remaining kind.

“Whitman said I am all men and women!”

Tea in Aleppo

-That last mortar round made a nice fire for us.
Pull up a piece of ruin and sit down.

-Will this new president kill us?

-What’s more certain when the old one
failed to?

-This new one hates us on the spot!

-Look around you! Avenues of Mayhem!
He’s just another form of modern clarity!

Shared Adventure

-Then we ran into the sewers to escape!

-A movie!

-The rats there started squealing, finally setting
up into a single ear-splitting SHRIEK.

-Jeez! Afraid? Or trying to intimidate?

-Both.

-They’re that complex?

-Fellow mammals!

Deeper Down the Demons.

So much so that Gedge afraid to sleep.

Tried hard not to.

But finally gave in.

And woke exhausted.

Day-by-day things helped.

Such as sister, Delsey, asking him to pick up
a seedless Rye.

The children having an impromptu party, and
chattering about crazy little sandwiches.

For some reason he told Rita at the bakery,
and Baker Henry overheard. Insisting then on
doing a special loaf twice as big.

Gedge waited for this as the  wintry day darkened
outside and occasional plops of snow slid down
the window.

Could he walk Rita home?

Random assaults lately. How odd a request,
though, really!

The monsters inside must be laughing at
such a weirdo actually aiding a normal person.

He did. And really never left. Speaking of odd.

And don't think sex right away.

A sort of magnetic cuddling event that white evening.

Helps him.

A year later, Bakers Henry, and Jensy, and half-retired
Mr Wada kick into overdrive for the wedding cake!

Rita and Gedge? The couple on the wedding cake?

Mr Wada spends two hours molding it to resemble them,
rejecting the stock generic one of confectionery history.

Okay okay, am I finally saying that this fool...steps from a
nuthouse...harrowed by horrors...

that, somehow, Love kicked the latters out or something?

Yup.

Dissecting Behavior

Brill and Aggie chewed over Barb’s remark to Katzy that evening:

Why are you so shy? You’re not that good!

“Well, why IS he so shy?” shrugged Aggie.

“All kinds of shy. There’s the one where the closed one won’t talk because the rest of us are too stupid.”

“I lean that way.”

“Or, being genuinely afraid and timid.”

“Not with a few drinks in him! No woman safe
from hands or wit of ole Katzy!”

“Or, being deeply depressed. Period.”

“Uh huh? Well, which for him? o Great Definer!”
What makes for shy in his case?

“All. None. We’re...great mysteries, Aggie.”

“Bullshit! Not a tenth of an ounce of MYSTERY
in the whole gang!”

Saloon Anxieties

The Colonel:  Bring me men with guts!

Double Drunk:  As entre or side dish?

at the trembling moment...

-How long have you been unafraid?

-Never! Any little piddling…!

-How about terrorists?

-Crawling up my ass!

-Careful using your Glock. Get a clean shot!

Inside

The Planner

Bert awoke at 6, somehow missing his
appointment with The Pee God at 3.

After the hurried bathroom, he lit a
cigarette.

Whispering to the expiring match,
“Well, who or what to avoid today?”

Then he laughed. And smoked.

And coughed.

Outside, the outside sided with itself.

Societal Seeing

 “I see,” said Dorsel.

“I too!” from Max, followed
by Maxine's nod.

Rands, however, took some
convincing from them.

Finally came aboard!

But then Bertram announced (He always
announced!)

"In truth, you all SEE nothing but what
you're programmed to see. That hasn't
changed in many years, and won't.”

"Uh huh?" laughed Dorsel.

“Your ideas, even when you think them
daring, fit a well-worn groove the
authorities are more than comfortable with.”

His Loretta entered the room. "Stop it, Bert!
People can stand only so much reinventing
of the wheel."

“It's completely caved in and utterly useless!”
spat Bert. “Decay is all!”

When those two left, Maxine sneered
“Such men are dangerous! L-except.”

L-except meant that as a literary allusion
it was free of the requirement to use "persons."

Fear and Melody

He was afraid of everything. The future held horrors!

The authorities knew of his type, and sought to
understand. In order to insure more producing units:
cut down on sick days.

Thus they instituted an essay with the annual tax
form. Tell us about your non-financial year.

Unfortunately, the fearful man, after writing many
cautious drafts, forgot.

He was deported.

In his new country, though despised, he fears nothing.

Lives on odd jobs and scraps of food.

He sings continuously, early folk-rock, and is laughed at
for his attempts.

Years have passed and he won’t stop smiling.

Efforts have been made to send him elsewhere, but no one
wants him.

He can’t make a friend, male or female, but keeps trying.

When he gets senior, the Foreign Department softens, gives
him a vague award.

At the tiny ceremony, he thanks his old and new nations
equally. And Melody, his blind cat.

A Shop Exists

in its own building
to repair things.
Flapping belts

and smell of oil
in half-darkness.

Wizened proprietor gives
you numbered stub circled

with the date promised.
All in order, and anytime
you’re there, the sights

and smells reassure. One
day the building missing!

Coils of weeds surround
imprint. Merchants near-

by change the subject.
A policeman merely
shrugs. I think of tossing

the broken item into a trash
barrel but he has seen it.
