A Baby in Something

Just One Crisis

Hopey, somehow, became a sort of project
manager for the new condos being built
for artists.

He had been merely one who scraped a
down-payment for an efficiency apartment.

The Plumbers Union president astounded by pulling

his members from the site!

Shouting at Hopey “It’s a 14E job and you want 14!”

What could that mean? He went into the plans on his
computer, but could find nothing.

Then he became paralyzed. Hours fled. Finally called
the only true adult he knew. A former big man who
knew others. “You sound like a dove that flew into the
side of a building. He looks dead, then staggers
a bit, but in the end, flies away!”

“I’m...looking dead!”

A scheme hatched where this Smit would phone a city bigshot.
In An entirely different department, but he, in turn, knew
who else to call.

Plus, Hopey had to reach as many people as possible
at Licenses and Inspections.

He did, re 14, 14E, and was soaked and dazed at the end.

The following day, the union guy came to his cramped
office and screamed. Hopey screamed back. Both men
grew exhausted and the union chief finally whispered,
“We’ll all come back tomorrow, but you’re absolutely
assuring me the work lands between 14 and 14E.
I don’t want any freakin legalities!”

Hopey phoned his new mentor that night to thank him.
He sensed an atmosphere of patient realism, and thus
exclaimed “I know. I know! I’m a baby!”

“Everybody’s a baby in something. You grow up
because people depend on you.”

“Don’t! Don’t depend on me! Ever! I can’t fuckin stand it!”

“Do you believe in God?”

Dead air, and then “No.”

“Too bad.”

Gracing Work

With All Due Speed

Many prevailed on Senator Harley Eps
to introduce the bill asking, as a Social
Good, for the Non-Working Class to
work an hour a week. It passed.

The particular task ordained was to
schedule the off-time of the Working
Class. Thus making such leisure richer
and more fulfilling.

Not arduous, since computer programs
existed to do just that.

So the new job consisted in pressing a
button or so.

But, some of the NWs came in contact with
workers, and requested a sort of hazard pay.

The flat fee for NWs was 500 an hour.

Virulently anti-union, of course, they formed
one, and their contract was to be larded
with clauses begatting clauses as to family
leave, holidays, sick time etc.

Their first demand was a doubling of the
flat fee. So, 1000 to work an hour a week.

Eps and colleagues had enough at that point,
and legislation cancelling the law sailed through.

And, farsighted on this rare occasion, putting
aside up to two hundred million for the expected
lawsuits.

Labor Day!

-Yeah, and every vicious Righty hater of working people
will suddenly find a union member in his brutal tribe.
“And my cousin, Hipp Eskew of Bakers’ Union Local 97,
has given many a delicious cake to all sorts of celebrations!”

-It’s miraculous!

-I don’t know. Look in a family you don’t know whatever
 you’ll find.

Higher Sad

Song of the Heart

She cried in the Bentley going home.

No more of these panels!–-unless nice people on them.

What had she to do with unions?

And what on earth do they want anyway?

They get all in a passion and nothing whatever is clear!

Bucking Bronco Riders

When your head hits the ground,
it’s time to let go.

So does every profession
have its clever warning.

Lots of wit goes into
rounding together. Those

intending evil to you
even as we speak
being no dumbbells.

Aunt Jemima, she join de union!

Rose the cry from
mud-stompers, so
colorfully dressed.

Above, the overseer:
“This will not stand! Bad

enough we still have ‘em, with-
out letting just anyone join! Even

they,” he pointed down, “could
try manifesting some class.”

Testimony

-I was a knee-jerk Liberal until I met a decent Republican.
He explained things very patiently. Changed my life
in that instant!

-And did a chorus of angels sing a mighty chord?

-Unfortunately, they wanted union scale.

Sandbagging, Revered American Tradition

Remembering my Dad's union, ITU, mostly linotypers,
Newspaper management dispatches a fresh Yale grad

to what they know will be a wild, raucous meeting,
& membership responds with shouts & screams, plus
an accomplished double-talker who commences

his questions clearly enough, but then mish-
mashes hilariously & at agonizing length.

“What? Excuse me?” sputters callow interpreter of
Plutocracy, furiously digging into his attache case.

Oh well, he’ll get chances to learn, including
this occasion, but, I suspect, remain a fool,
a prosperous one due to class, of course.

MOONDUST PIXIES FORMING UNION

Coordinator answers a question

We figured this is the time. Under virulently anti-union Republicans,
too many hurdles.

Funny thing, we have our own Republicans, trying to sabotage
the effort and conferring hourly with management. And our own
liberal Democrats, wanting to smash things up rather than negotiate
with what they call Plutocrats.

The latter want to throw dust everywhere; the former just a pinch.
So, that follows historically, I guess.

Oh well, we'll reconcile. Stranger factions have.
