Too Late Smart

-That Pa Dutch proverb says it ALL.
Too soon old, too late schmart!

-If ever.

-Amen.

-Let me revise that to never. Just when
you got it figured out how to hit the last
bizarre curveball, Mother Nature hits
YOU with one totally unspeakable!

-Sends me to my knees?

-You who are too proud to be beg turn
into the world’s meechiest, lowest,
prideless…

-Stop! Lower than whaleshit?

-Whaleshit is Mt Everest to you!

-So? What’s left?

-Can’t hear you. Can no longer
hear...

Returning

They meet after a long while,

returning gifts to Home Depot.

Later, their serving Elf had lost
a couple of steps at Santa's
Coffeehouse, so she remarks
"We were such Idiots!"

"Age appropriate."

"I don't think I like that.
It implies I'm never really
calling the shots."

"You dance. We danced."

"I'd like to try The Lindy."

"Just need a partner."

"Not really."

The Weekend

-Her monosyllables pollute
my poor brain still.

-Never embark on a long
weekend with a stranger.

-We left in icy rain.

-That's just climate. How
about the rest?

-I worked even harder on
conversation. A flop. Sex came
after, anyway.

-Glimmer of hope?

-Puppetry.

-Wash it away. All of it.
Never happened!

-Nearly there, but the gods
totally bored, so she's come
to work in my department.

-Not good! Do you two speak
of your wingless lovebird time?

-Just to guffaw.

-Don't try again!

-Inevitable.

-As in failure?

-Wouldn't want to disappoint
myself.

-Life! Grim grim life!

-You can be my biographer.

-I'll tell you what! I gather
two more alleged men, and we
go to a ballgame.

-But all we do is laugh.

-Yeah!

Actuarial Fate

-With what I can plug in now,
I can tell you the age you'll
die.

-And if I press you, day and time?'

-I sense sarcasm, but...I could
come close, no matter what.

-Well, plug nothing in because
I don't wanna know!

-But if you knew, you could...

-Straighten some things out?
Like, with Steph?

-The amazing Stephanie!

-Amazed me right outa my mind!

-You could soothe both minds

-To an extent. We’d eventually fight
as to how to reconcile.

-So, it won't be perfect? It's
better than the present standoff.
Which, by the way...

-Morphs over the months to an
unhealthy growth?

-Uh huh? Why don't you pretend
you have a year or so left, and then
the pair of you do what you can?

-I'm the one acutely feeling the
disadvantage. What's her actuarial picture?

-If I had to guess, I'd...well, much better.

-Do I get points, like in football.

-At least a touchdown and extra point.

-The latter is her speciality. Anyway,
a strong betting favorite is she!

-A piece of work! But so are you.

-Making it all the more difficult.
Besides...the best things fall outa
the sky. I should be patient. Trust
to Luck!--Steph and I should.

-Not according to my figures and your
health, physical and  mental.

-I'm a case! I don't wanna be a case!

-We have some small choices, but I wouldn't
wish to run the figures.

Working At the Sawmill

Carly, Accountant and owner’s wife,
always passed your check with some
remark.

With me, always the same. “Some overtime
in there. Maybe you can start on your
falling-down shed I pass each morning?”

Getting the materials! I promised.

Actually the shed was used for the Saturday
Get-Together featuring The Banjo Maniacs
with Delsey-Do!

She carried a keyboard and sang.

Mix in some moonshine and marijuana and
harder!

This whole part of the county looked forward
to it.

Well, it did eventually fall down. No surprise.
And firemen dug us out.

Mostly scrapes and bruises, but I, your funny MC, missed a month at the sawmill.

Carly sent a card, original name scratched out.

Flirtation

Incident

Brawnette, on an errand to Shipping, flirted with Mackey
and Hork. So pretty, even in a loose white coat.

They later speculated on who she liked better.

Each man believing it was he.

Then, alone, at a locker, rejecting the idea, shaking at
its nerve.

Outside, the winter light purpling.

The department had buzzed; the plant beginning to follow.
Laughing hints at widespread lockers.

Both men killed in separate traffic accidents late that icy evening.

From thence, Dr Dellacondif, lab boss, assumed an even
crisper propriety.

Bubbles and Martyrs

Stages of Piquant

Jen was piquant when they married.

But his last daydream image of her showed
a crown of thorns.

Before the stone fell from the Oxley Building.

She keeps the Channel Six report on her iPad.
Yellow tape and numerous officers.

In Dr Kildad Morrisey's course The New You!

she’s becoming piquant again.

Grayer.

"You! Of all...!"

So, she had it on him.

He toils; she snacks more than works.

In a year, he walks with the big guy.
She is let go. Part of a big purge.

She could still talk, but not so close.

The new girl minds her own stuff. That's all
there is to that. She won’t chub up.

The old one steps in front of a bus on her
way to her new job.

"Fate?" his deep side asks.

"Why not fat?" his joke one quips.

Latest Human Suffering

you see and hear
after Haiti Quake.

Answer appeal
for money.
Charity as sum.

And totem,
shaking a gourd.

Not for absolution,
but delay, since, by

the lyric of Mose Alison,
Your Time Will Come.
