Why Republicans Love Rural Places
The women too crushed
to be coy.
The men devoured
by opiods.
The clergy rushing bib-
lical tricks
to line both up
come election time.
And everyone knows how
to fish.

a quaint western tale
Judge liked to open the warehouse
of certain mornings. To think.
His satellite office there deathly quiet
at 6 AM.
Not so, that Thursday when actual
cowboys cut the locks to the warehouse
gates to establish a shortcut getting
their cattle to the stockyard.
For some reason the driven beasts all let
go at the same time.
And the expression about the shit hitting
the fan held true.
Actually the fan running into Excelsior
Hair Products, covering Judge as a result.
Actually too, getting him to shriek as to
the end of the world.
For he was a Tribulationist, though
he thought the world would end in
unspeakable sin. Thus inevitable fire.
That the world might end first in shit,
and in a small Texas town chock-a-block
with churches...well, defied whatever logic
remained in the world.
Things, of course, went on the same half-
ass manner, but Judge, unconvinced, found
his way, with the help of his wife and children,
to the Colonel Parkham and Sons Rest Home.
There he belongs to a bible study group,
indeed the whole place is one.
“Well, the world has ended! But this
new one...!” he begins re Matthew 17 20.

Twos
-Reminds me of the biblical story of
Rudolpho and Eck.
-Whoa! No such duo! I had the whole
book screamed past my ears, courtesy
of insane uncles and aunts.
-During your formative years?
-They rendered them gnashingly formless!
-Anyway, you’re right. Rudolpho and Eck
were interpreters. Forbidden to have
their own story.
-Queer too?
-A few called it that. But that was merely
half the time. At any rate, they toured with
light crew, scabrous musicians, and a
phalanx of whores.
-I'll take whatever comes to my own phalanx.
By the boring bye what became of...?
-One night in Allentown, both went completely,
irretrievably mad! Totally a-babble!
-Was the torch taken up?
-By the local Republican Party. It's the Cal and
Edgar Show now. They're makers, not takers!
-Fakers!
-Live and let live!
-You can't do that with cutpurses!
Once they do their thing, you'll starve
by the side of the road, no matter how
many clowns parade by.
-I'm amused though. And have purchased
a lifetime of dried food.
-Arf!

The Word
“We're both ragtag fundamentalist preachers,
or act the parts. He does drunks and addicts,
and I, Scarlet Women!
The Mega Church hires us to travel around to
rural churches and scare the Devil’s own shit
outa everybody.
Hey! We really go fire-and-brimstone! Everybody
loves it! Well, not the particular objects. They end
up trembling.
It's a real partnership. I research for him
and he for I. Say a guy owns a little hardware
store? Three rehabs, and slumbers in gutters.
Customers don't have a clue, so, you know:
Truth sets everybody free! My Partner gives the
shoddy bio from the pulpit as a fiery warning
to us all. The devil being the manufacturer of
all such addictive crap! And toxic secrets.
He chooses for me a typical pink pretty. Butter
wouldn't melt in her pursy mouth! Could be a
juicy abortion back there, though. Or whatever.
Well, THAT’s hitting the lottery!
Probably just the usual carnality with associated lies.
At any rate, when I'm through with her, she's quivering
Jello on the floor, that Scarlet Woman!
I say it like it's fun, but it's damn hard work too!
Good? Are we actually doing...?
Ultimate questions left for Headquarters! We serve!
Hey! Degrees from two halfass Bible “Colleges?”--
and I majored in Basketball?
Two Good Ole Boys made good, if you ask me!”

When Vague Friends Marry
we want to throw rice afterwards. Best Man, Chubby Carker,
has been chatting with Reverend Baxmead, who pronounces
“No they haven’t left yet.”
“But the limo awaits!” Chubby adds drily, pointing.
They’re nowhere in the usual church rooms, so a search
party forms.
Chubby ultimately confides to Bridesmaid, Helena
Markham Dillars O’Malley Insull, that he thinks
they vagued themselves into another dimension.
“I wish they took this shitty dress with ‘em!”
Salmon and nearly florescent.
“Yes,” he remarked sagely, “everybody has to go through
things the right way, no matter what.”
“Well that includes them two! I’m stopping. My shimmers
are bouncing off the Bible pictures on the wall, and giving
me a headache.”
“Funny how we affect the environment.”
“Hah hah!”

“The essential can be detrimental.”
-Oh boy, number 67 of Hobart Grimshaw’s
Bromides. Listen and learn to live!
-I don’t deny that I’ve culled proverbs etc
from books, from friends, the Net, Bible.
-Horseradish. Mostly.
-Guides life! What do you do?
-Just a good heart, that’s all. What’s that part
of Bible? Don’t worry about what to say, I’ll
help you when the time comes!
-I like your simple rephrasing, Lil. The hens in the
barnyard would stop pecking to listen.
-Uh huh? Well they wouldn’t listen to your
Jiffy Guide to Silly-ass Living.
-O ye of little faith!
-I’m still getting it, staying on the wavelength!
-Yeah. Sure.
-Hey if the speaker for United Nations suddenly died and they tabbed you to go on, you’d be a chattering wreck!
-And you’d stride in bold as brass.
-Bet your ass! I’d just open my mouth.
-And knock the international scene back fifty years!
-Thrust it forward through real faith, not ticky-tacky.
-Well, harmless as these daydreams are, Dear, I gotta go back to what they pay me for. Anyway, enjoy your belfry!
-I will.

Faith and Congress
Tap-Dancing in the House
-You came here an indifferent Christian.
-Comic-book version of Bible in my office.
-Then the Evangelicals steamrolled the party in your state.
-And The White Flame of Faith has shot from my ass ever since!
-How could you do it so fast? Metamorphose like that?
-Called Method Acting. Brando taught me. And Cockroaches.
-Uh huh? And what if by some Kafka-esque miracle, the whole
shebang turned atheist?
-Need you ask? God wouldn't bless our work, but who gives a shit?
-That last phrase encapsulates your service.
-Something has to.

Religions inform us
as to what ruling class
proscribes as moral.
Governments follow suit,
their doctrines too
gussied up with just peachy
language mush-
ing about in both Pre-
amble and Bible.
So, everywhere, really. Though
Scandinavians give better life,
Italians and Greeks more cacophonic.
Thus do we rack up the middle isthmus
of Capitalistic Desire.

In some American elections,
the argument gets biblical.
A joyless wasteland
where your gnawing roots
of sooty trees pledged
if you dare install
the awful opponent.
Scripture freely quoted.
Which Devil employs also,
and more gracefully.
