Mindset
Carley didn’t wanna talk about it ever!
Ralph T. Walker nodded warily, maintaining
HIS exploded marriage, too, simply
outa bounds! As a result, they seldom
spoke! Amazing how so many innocent things
invoke the scabrous past. They married.
She got pregnant but then
spontaneously aborted.
They both sport bowling jackets
with coiling dragons on the back.
Their only friend, Patsy Hess,
spouts garrulously. One day
cries a solid hour in loneliness.
Her stoic friends don’t notice.

Details in the Locale
Fixing Up
-His girlfriend dumped him so
ceremoniously–-everything but
a brass band!--hardly a corner
in this fair city where they’re
not on Humiliation Watch.
-There to laugh at him uproariously?
-The poorer sectors, yes.
-For richer?
-Thrusts, sophisticated and exquisitely
cruel.
-So, bottom line, everywhere he goes he’s
shamed? Piling on to his wretchedness?
-Whammo! Or weewee.
-People are disgusting!
-Since he won’t but speak two words
or so in his depression, I’m trying
to fix him up with Jolly Judy.
-She’ll lift him!...or talk him to death.
-She’s the only choice. A normal girl
not into therapy, but fun!
-How come you always need to have
fun with other folks, and they’re usually
the worst?
-What’s that movie? Death takes a Holiday?
Well, people let go of their sour funks from
time to time.
-Catch ‘em on the upswing?
-The only way!
-Is the ordinary condition misery?
-Screw you!
The Definition
-They call me dumb. Everybody calls me dumb.
-Okay, now let’s just examine what that means?
-You’re right about that. They’re awfully mean!
-No, you misunderstood.
-See!

Not Ever Getting Old
Budgey never objected to his
title of Errand Boy, though
almost forty.
But Mr Delser did. When he
took over, Personal Messenger
bestowed.
It was sensed in the small
company, then, that most of
the teasing should cease:
the standard stuff about
not having a girlfriend etc.
Budgey got famous in New Haven,
though, not for his new title, but
because he was attacked shortly
thereafter by a maniac at Church
and Chapel at High Noon.
Beaten with his leather bag,
then with his Converse sneaker.
In front of an attentive crowd.
Last, this maniac, Nels Nelsomer,
wrestled down jeans and jockeys,
and attempted to ram the sneaker into
rectum.
All the while screaming of Puerto Ricans!
At that point, the police arrived, macing
and clubbing the agitated nut into Catatonia.
Mr Delser ordered Budge to take a week off.
When he returned, all his recipients
sympathized, but after a few weeks began
teasing him on the girlfriend matter again.
Then, a development! When Budgey testified
at a preliminary hearing as the State tried
to avoid a trial and stow Nutty Nils into
a facility for the criminally insane, Defense
produced a blurry tape purportedly showing
Budgey eating at the same Lighthouse Point
hot dog emporium as Nils.
Then by a startling leap of logic: the men
had become acquainted, the whole business
blossoming into a romance, etc.
The assault actually a lover's quarrel!
The State had enough of this nonsense, and
didn't even bother proving that the red
and blue messenger bag shown in fuzzy
closeup belonged to A1 Business Expediters,
and not Budgey.
The attorneys conferred and agreed on Nils
becoming a lifelong guest at the Quinnipiac
Retreat. In the Criminal Wing, but that
did not have to be publicized.
Unfortunately for Budgey, the homosexual
angle stuck, and he was teased about it daily.
Sometimes ingeniously.
As an example:
-Where there’s smoke, there’s fire!
-That’d be mire.
-As in muck and...?
-Wheels within wheels in the preponderance
of Queer Business!
His renewed outrage and affront being
funny always. Never getting old!
The police had asked, by the way, if they
could keep the evidence sneaker for their
museum.
He concurred, dollar entrance fee waived
for him in perpetuity.

Knowing the Competition
Songs, Old and New
Triple-B and Saint Franny showed up early for the picnic.
Monikers for Ball Busting Betsy, and, from History.
Fran once cleaned a shower that had been puked in, saying
“It’s nothing.”
His role of scissoring greens, and hers of tossing and bossing
understood, there was no trouble. Initially. But she began
feeling restless.
Final result: He ends up sobbing and retching under an oak.
Another scalp for her, though much much too small a challenge.
She awaited the main thrust as the gang filtered in.
Uh uh. Everybody as hostile as she.
Jason Terrible snatched the salads away, saying he would
pretty up the work of three year olds! He rode herd on
the Hilton kitchen in real life, so Triple-B overmatched.
“How about you stir your capacious ass and get me some
radishes?”
She did, and was dismissed.
St Franny annoyed everyone, but had fallen asleep.
Triple-B eased past him to the grill people. Where, nobody spoke to her.
She eventually drifted through gossip knots, holding her own, but just.
Oh well, ended up at twilight, sitting over the mud at riverside, her
capacious ass sagging a hammock from the Carter Administration,
and one inch above weeds. Knees shooting up past her ears, bones!
Not a good look.
Sucked on a tall bitter lemon and vodka, half and half.
Passed out.
Jed Aurmel and his former student and present antagonist,
“Hannah” Harks, thought they should do something.
“Maybe she’s dead!”
“Forever bringing up The Ideal, Professor?”
She was actually Millie, but a Hannah had poured water
on a drowning man in an old song.

Building Emotion
Glenda and I
played together as tykes. I don’t know if it was because our
parents ignored us, but we learned to practice little cruelties.
We were acting–-that was understood–-but tears produced
at times, nonetheless.
Her family moved to a better neighborhood, ending our small
drama, and presently both of us are married to indifferent
partners.
I to Marcia, she Budge.
Once, I met her at Motor Vehicles would you believe?
Getting our pictures snapped at neighboring cameras.
Joked, over coffee, about my Marcia and her Budge as a couple.
When you share a childhood, you can talk about anything.

Beacons of Political Humor
“Conservatives Are Always Congratulating Themselves

asinine reality. Yes! Gleeful Righties keep uncovering
fatter and fatter targets!”
“Well...absent flies to pull wings off.”
