Heinous

They close in.

Last exit sealed.

Clear Heads:
“Surrender!”

Evangelicals:
“Await His Will!”

You have no Faith
and thus pretend.

No one minds.

Power of One

The Woman Who Reversed Herself

drove the rest of us bananas!
Not a big deal unless she
maliciously fabricated,

attempting to destroy.
Otherwise, Cute.

Such a dilemma!

In Truth,
she made us so schizo

we had to admit it
to try retaining any vestige

of sanity. Our route back
to acknowledge how
freakin nuts we were.

We got there! It helped
she owed each money.

It also helped that she coyly
dropped US!

In an absolute fit
of creative lying!

Years have passed!
And one of our number
has accidentally met her.

Sawing to the rest that Butter
wouldn’t melt etc.

The inevitable, awful, negotiations
will estrange us

from each other fatally!
So, am I saying she will win?

Of course! Sorry, but you never, ever,
re-engage THE WHOLLY TOXIC!

-Cremation in the Nation!

-Your wit acknowledges no bounds.

-Hey, it’s the way the ball, like, careens!

Dr Elling and wife, Nathalie, disgusted
at Red’s initial comment as to the family
of eight incinerated in the blazing SUV.

But Red had been puzzlingly depressed
the whole rainy week before that crash
into the huge oak on Appletree Lane.

Besides, his Secret of Life WAS laughing
at whatever small people thought taboo!

Their little fears would forever bring kicks.

Funny

Jerome’s usual question:
What’s so funny?

Indeed, what his office mates
laughed at was more often
cruel. Some asinine, pretentious
individual getting humiliated,
and the like.

He was better than that.

And even when the humor
was more cosmic, restrained
himself.

Such as when the drunken
pastry chef collapsed in
death, imprinting the delicate
batter with his face.

His family baked and ate same.

So what? Primitive Christians
all felt superior to.

Nothing funny here! Move on!

Said office mates eventually
tired of explaining why...anything--
labeled him a stick.

Fair enough, until Jennifer-Jo
caught in the wind one dark
Spring workday morning.

Demonstrating, thus, the modern
equivalent of bloomers.

She apologized, as Jerome did for
witnessing this weird fluorescence
in stranger light.

The image stayed with Jerome.
Intruded, really.

He lingered in the Break Room
one day, and they laughed about
other things.

Somehow discovering each to be
passionate and driven...at additional
impromptu meetings.

Oh well, skip ahead. Who couldn’t
guess the rest?

Neighboring state had looser
laws, so they eloped there of
a weekend.

The homespun wife of the
Justice assembled a wedding
ceremony, her perpetually-
high and Millennial son as
Best Man.

His C over C hilarity ignored
then...but roared about in stories
for children, Trevor and Cynthia,
later.

Trevor gushed that it was an old
Hollywood Romantic Comedy!

Cynthia: Same stale crap!

The Outrageous Woman

never ceased offending.

She began trying not to,
attending a class in
making friends.

Thereafter, gifted five new
acquaintances with a
bobble-head doll.

Each, placed in dark
isolation in varied domiciles,
moved continuously.

Though never activated.

Friends Into Theology

-Where were you when we walked
on the moon?

-Alive.

-That vague?

-That’s me. Will I recall more clearly
in Heaven, do you suppose?

-I think it’s always a golden present
tense there. Quite lovely!

-Good coffee? Can I order Kona?

-Think of it, it appears!

-Being good was tough. You need
nice coffee!

-Of course, we might be barking up
the wrong tree. Heaven, like, completely
spiritual!

-Sounds like Hell!

-Don’t be flip!

-I thought I was.

-Your nickname, but you know what
I mean!

-Will I be able to continue my great love
there with my Jennifer?

-The spiritual aspects.

-Those aren’t the ones I’m thinking of.

-No!

-How do I transfer? I mean the roasted-
ass bit probably a myth. Hell might be
a better fit for the two of us.

-You can’t speak for Jen.

-God himself better not try THAT!

Smitten

Professor Denzler amazed at
the parallel to the sexual dances
of New Hano and other Pacific islands

Yet Marjorie Dawning had invented it herself.

Performed it at the Lions.

He had room in the budget to invite her to the Anthropology Club, then to show the old British Pathe footage of the island dances.

Frenzies might be the better label.

Anyway, her performance seized grad
student Bill Ortway, and he later stood in
the sudden ice storm outside her small
hotel and stared.

Bea Hoddles noted him from the kitchen
window as she made sandwiches for
Room Service.

Later brought him hot chocolate.

Her art wasn’t dance but warmth, and
Bill quickly changed the object of his
smittenness.

She brought him home that midnight,
and her helter-skeltered dolls glowed
in approval.

The Man Whose Wife Misunderstood Him

finally resolved to act with clarity,
explaining all his motives en route.

As a result, she got him less and less.

Left with one, Roger, a confused inferior.

The Quartet

-Your wife forgot something,
so drove back downtown.
She says you can reach her
on her cell.

-Never turns it on.

-Oh?

-Just likes patting it in
her jeans. Reassuring.

-I...notice little disturbances,
uh, interruptions of light.
Rustles.

-Sidney Carton.

-Cat?

-Most surreptitious.

-And literary!  Well it all sounds nice.
You, wife, cat in little Ractal.

-The town that even Ignominy forgot.

-And you call Ragtag, of course.

-Are you a prophet?

-Can be a part of the job.

-Well...which of the three are you taking along?

-We'll get to that.

-If I may make a suggestion? You should
have a substitute to plug right in.

-A good one, but, alas, I travel alone.

-But not on the return leg? At any rate, the balance can be restored here pretty quickly.

-Is that the most important thing?  Balance?

-What else?

-I'll have Sidney come out so I can get a look.

-You must praise him! Otherwise he's impossible!

-Your wife is patting her phone. She's at the
bottom of Skinner Ravine. Nasty! But she
won't suffer. Sheriff Gathers will tell you that.

-Sad. I only have good things to say about
Death Valley.

-Her nickname, naturally. Will you mention that
in the funeral notice?

-Must. Many don't know her real name.

-The desert's an odd place.

-We embrace that.

-I can see that.

-And it, us.

-Sidney Carton! What a total and absolute sweetheart!

-Well done.

Goes On the Struggle

“Deflower! Despoiler!
Raucous moral pig!”

Thus I confront, afire
with Righteousness.

He laughs. “If I knew
this Heaven such an im-
mense racket, I’da...”

“We’re taking it back!”

“Uh huh? Well you must
excuse me. Still have some

angels to bribe.” And then
the greatest sin!

He giggles! So un-
masculine!

Yes and No

Woodrow determined to be nice.

A winning strategy.

For the most part.

Many friends dropped out, though.

Most of those with little effect on them.

But some few stuck with him, and the ills that niceness can inflict.

Minds

Rodney counseled Lena that
-There are ways to do things
without losing your mind!

Lena allowed that there were, her
girlfriends handling life better, and
THEN losing their minds.

-Then be like them, then. Normal!

Rodney crusaded for status quo.

Be insane for Lena to drop him mid
all of the others.

Shared Adventure

-Then we ran into the sewers to escape!

-A movie!

-The rats there started squealing, finally setting
up into a single ear-splitting SHRIEK.

-Jeez! Afraid? Or trying to intimidate?

-Both.

-They’re that complex?

-Fellow mammals!

NAME_______________________

-She whines, screams, and sighs, Often in the same breath.

-Jesus! What a handful!

-Not so with a special oatmeal.

-That’s awful! You drug her?

-We eat from the same bowl.

-Wonderful! Two zombies! Can zombies do it?

-Sedately.

Most Find Odd

Introducing an academic couple.
One so bizarre that their graduating
program in Linguistics has asked their
institution’s name not be mentioned.

Cliff and Mandy, their real names.

Hear them conversing, and you'll recognize
not word one!

They have invented a language and speak to
each other only in it.

Oh I think some English might creep in,
but I've not heard it.

At any rate, the language resembles most,
in feeling, that of Italian Gypsies, rich with
curses and insults.

I freely translate this last from Mandy
towards Cliff. "You remain a disgusting
pig from an equally disgusting sty!"

He responds in kind. This is their life.

My wife thinks they love each other in
this bent way. She's deluded!

They have the intellect to skillfully hate!

Well, they're getting up there, and feel
a responsibility to pass the language on.

So they're working on a web page.

It's under construction, she tells me.

“All of life is a web page under construction,
he laughs bitterly.

Then they turn on each other in their fierce module.

I feel excluded: their fondest desire.

Force of Nature, or Pain in the Ass?

Our Diva

When our Jeanetta goes full voice, we avoid her, naturally.

Our Diva! insists Mark, who sees little wrong anywhere.

The rest of us in self-preservation mode.

I remark that even her few harmonies now clash,
rubbing us crazy.

Mark says the rest of us crawl between heaven and earth,
while she mostly soars.

Uh huh? Leaving the gang battered once again.
We never learn.

The best parts of us don’t! insists Mark.

Then why don't you marry her?

It's forbidden by Heaven itself! A man must not
proceed to his death if he can help it.

He wants her declared a National Treasure!

We have other suggestions.

Important Parties

He still hated her.

But there she was at the party for Mickey and
Melora going to Europe for his job.

Laughing! Well he had seen her cry many a time.

The more she enjoyed, the more he withdrew.
Finally sitting in the middle of several chairs,
nursing the bottle he had brought. Perhaps not
the exact one...had grabbed it from a table.

He's eventually shoved to the wall with the chairs,
and rugs thrown over the jumble. For the kids and
their dancing.

Muttering under there, and then crying. One youngster
shouts “Lighten up, Old Man!”

Their comedian.

He falls asleep, but wakes to hear her leaving.
Even over all the din, her usual hysteria.

Emerges in the middle of crazy dancing.

But Becks rescues blinking him. "Where you been?
We got a helluva football pool going! Throwing in
twenty each, so one sweet payoff!"

"I'm in!"

“Money talks!”

Gives him the twenty. “I got the munchies you wouldn’t believe!”

“Eat for Crisakes! Enough for an army!”

Laurette loads her plate too. Did she see Delsey leave?

“Yeah, with some bum. Exquisite taste!...oh I’m sorry:
you were one.”

“Ancient History!”

Children and Horses

Shaw and his buds
allowed for sexuality

within bounds: “As long
as they don’t frighten
the children and horses.”

Today with queer shame
wearing away, decent folks

can still sniff other bent comport-
ments in order to take to task,
or envy, or both at once.

At any rate, always be keen on any
licentious missteps of another.

The angels can miscue during
pocket pool, and thus may ask.

Little Girl, Little Curl

Most especially horrid!
Meet with parents as their
experienced friend. Her

father for some punishment.
To his credit, not physical.

Withholding beloved chocolate
milk a week. Religo-Mom

for prayer, the intensity
of which points quietly

to goodness, or at least
relative peace.

I, in professorial guise,
submit a program
long and wise.

They object to its length,
which suggests even

greater doubt re
my reading children.

Short of it, we give up.
Victory for brat. Oh well,

that settled it then, queasily.
Fast forward twenty years

and she lives with cohort
of tantrum tossers. Boys too.

Drama has exhausted them
to zombies, though they

metamorphose each day
for business, and fake it

to make it. This goes unusually well
until excruciating scene disgusts

everybody. Prompting vacating from
latest victims by our own adult brat.
So? Can you spot one ask you?

Quite impossible.
They don't come
with timing fuses

like bombs in
bad movies.
