Enchanted Cottage
I’m asked to visit Marlene by Clifford.
She has asked for me.
I join him there and we walk a path actually covered
with rose petals, to her Hansel and Gretel cottage.
She’s lucky there. Most other patients in wards.
Has forgotten me. So I refresh her. “My daughter,
Barbara, goes to Cornell. I call her Clancy.”
This delights her, as she bustles about the small kitchen
repeating Clancy and laughing.
Clifford and I sit on children’s chairs nearby, displacing dolls.
She brings the tea and crumb cakes, and puts the works on
the bitty table.
Pretend. A child’s tea set and little pewter plates.
We eat, she the gracious hostess indeed!
My mini cup is oft “refilled.” He and I tell her the missing
cakes are delicious.
The doll I replaced, a sailor boy, suddenly collapses,
on the sofa. She jumps up to straighten him up.
“Oh he’s just lazy!”
Raggedy Ann, we’re assured, agrees.
Marlene, before we leave, assumes the tragic adult: “O Captain,
our fearful trip is done!”
Before we get into our cars, Clifford informs me that she called
him Captain once upon a time. “But the rest, Walt Whitman.”
Unfortunately, he tells me, he must divorce her in order to
marry Rosie. “Not your Rosie,” he laughs. Who left.
My heater oddly seems to put out cinnamon later, so I stop at
the bake shop next to LA Bodyworks.
As I drive, extract a crumb bun from the warm carton.

Politics Waxes and Wanes
But Poker Is Forever
“Who melt this dess?” Mick-Mack, our Teapartier, exclaimed.
“Finally losing it totally!” Worse remarked.
“Don't you DISH?” He meant wish.
Worse was for ‘Worse than a Communist.’ Our leader, Clock,
had stepped in back then, pronouncing no more politics,
but Worse's name stuck.
When Mickey-Mack didn't show the next time, Clock tried
home and cell, then called police. Everybody always had
gotten here, or phoned.
Patrolperson Webberly entered at the next game, asking us
questions. MM had disappeared without the proverbial trace.
Worse guessed he spontaneously combusted in rage.
But the Professor scoffed that all such cases on shaky science.
“Rather, he fell into the river and drowned.”
“Like in Goodnight Irene?” Worse asked him.
“...his body f-loating to sea, then slowing sinking.” On went
Professor, as if with the body.
“Full fathom five
our colleague lies,
his bones are coral made.”
Webberly sat in for the first time.
Now she’s a Captain and never misses. She's also ‘Nose.’
Though a beauty, one generous proboscis. When winning,
she often says “The Nose knows!”
Our teapartier never found, so less anger in the game,
and world.
The professor opines that he could be discovered,
or a fragment, if the department only thought outside
the box...!
Nose claims they’re required to do only that presently.
“Who melt this dess?” Clock yells at that moment.
We all laugh. The perennial ‘Dealt this mess’ never
again would be said that way here.
Clock finally announces the evening’s last hand,
and muses that he has played twelve years and
is twenty-four dollars ahead. “But that could be
behind. Since I lost my Evvie, my bookkeeping
is suspect."
“Well she left a legacy: Made you into a total pussy!”
Worse snaps.
Nose finally goes down the aisle with a house dick
from Sears. We’re all invited and like him off the bat.
But he couldn’t play. No couples!--from sad experience
with pair who continued their sniping into the game.
Clock dismissed them forever.
They wanted a vote, but he said “I’m the vote.”
“Who melt this dess?” our bride laughs now.
“Don't you worry about hubby's fidelity while you’re doing
your cutthroat thing here?” Clock occasionally kittenish.
“I never worry about anything. Wasted effort. I’ve seen the dregs
of everything and I’m immensely better off. Immensely!”
Well, rest of us still sorta worried a bit about our lost teapartier.
Icy cold case. But I guess that's life , or Poker, or something.

-When I need your vote, you deliver. Short and bitter.
-When you don't?
-Then you can go against us for your lovely Tea Party
of racists and sub-morons.
-You got it ass-backwards. They’re actually...
-We know what they are. The old reactionary wing
of the party, which has maintained its egregious self
since just after Lincoln.
-One of us will sit in your chair some fine day!
-Why if that happens, I'll just be full of praise!

TEA PARTY REPUBLICANS
We can't afford the future. And never will. Let all the infrastructure keep crumbling away and maybe we’ll
all of us learn our lesson!
OLD LINE REPUBLICANS
Hey! Have Treasury float humongous fuckin bond issues whilst we're in power! Borrow from China!
Grow the glorious deficit any which way! What’s the diff?
That way we get to name the roads and bridges and
airports for our conservative heroes.
Junior gets stuck with the bill? If he's smart he'll
borrow too. Keep it going until fiery rocks render
the Earth smoky-black, and nobody ever
ever really pays.
Totally fuckin beautiful!
DEMOCRATS
Fix the whole shitty infrastructure mess and
put our voters to work doing it! Soak the rich
to pay for everything. Tit for tat.
RADICAL DEMOCRATS
Level it! Start new with everyone wearing surplus
army outfits. Expropriate all standing hotels:
you shouldn’t have to screw outdoors.
THE NEW DECENCY! That’s the brand.
We want to start, like, immediately, but three
on our Executive Committee have lost their keys.
And the other members are not ready to issue
their report just yet--disagreements as to phrasing.
Some being acerbic revolutionaries, others,
florists of glowing syntax.

Be-LIEVE? I believe in nothing.
Oh I can recite our mantra: small
government, tax cuts, etcetera
fuckin etcetera, and bash a gay
when it becomes–-Family!--
my turn.
Not to mention torturing
Constitution to give
every man an AK47.
Slash spending! Unless it involves
agencies where I place your
retarded nephews Elmo. Just
put one in FBI. He can’t tie his
shoelace, might as well be
a black one. Anyway,
Tea Party money pours in thus
I’ve really commenced the super-

Why is everything so funny?
It’s a gift from God!

Protesting America
My closest big intersection

But today a tonic! Medical Marijuana!
Not acquainted with Mary Jane, though
do have glaucoma. If it gets fierce,

-Fox is aftermathing their tea parties.
-What else is news?
-Hannity says twenty thousand in Atlanta.
-That means five, still not bad. Better than
Sherman brought out there.
-What’s the difference, size of crowd?
-Hafta know beforehand. So you can paint logo on turnip trucks.
-And what would that be?
-Gumby staring at its ass.
