Coffee After Sad Fact
-And you're treating? I'm overwhelmed!
-As you know, Statue of Limitations has run out.
-We had been waiting for your last minute "Criminal" Barrage.
-Agents pissed, but we’re not going in ever again without
totally solid cases.
-What you see as criminal I see as opportunity.
-That's a Universal!
-Uh huh? Time to change the law again. Make it reflect real life!
-Buying legislators?
-No way! No such thing as bribery anymore. Citizens
United Ruling...
-has been such a useful whore to you.
-Long may she reign!
-I wonder if I’ll ever put you inside.
-If you do, then after a bit I’ll purchase tremendous pressure to show
I’ve been convicted under truly anachronistic laws.
-Great Laws!
-Life changes for the good!
-How can you get that last word in your mouth?
-How can we get any words in our mouths?

Goes On the Struggle
“Deflower! Despoiler!
Raucous moral pig!”
Thus I confront, afire
with Righteousness.
He laughs. “If I knew
this Heaven such an im-
mense racket, I’da...”
“We’re taking it back!”
“Uh huh? Well you must
excuse me. Still have some
angels to bribe.” And then
the greatest sin!
He giggles! So un-
masculine!

Criminal Match
A Man With Felonious Intent
met a woman, same.
You'd think Society'd be
in for it! Awful! you see,
a la Bonnie and Clyde.
Truth is they cancelled
each other out at a degree
angelic! This partially explain
lovely couples?
Just as unbelievable!
At any rate, negotiate
them cautiously. Like so
much else,
slide by.

Romance, Narrowly Defined
They pass each other in
the park daily over the
years.
But this morning, words
seem inevitable as they
meet at the covered bridge
and find its entrance criss-
crossed by yellow tape.
The stench of the soaking wood
proves overpowering, and both
see trees down on the other side.
"I can...see trees down," ventures he.
"The stench! of the soaking wood!"
She's dramatic, even adding, "My family
is mostly bizarre criminals."
They become a couple. No odder than most.
Until a year later when her two uncles
sentenced in separate tax evasion cases.
He makes a crack about baking a file
into a cake, and she goes off!
ALWAYS RIDICULING HER AND HER FAMILY!
Walking out she coos "Do say hello to your
mother and father...and don't leave out
Norman Rockwell!”
“Must...we...fight?”
“And goodbye! to your Goody Two Shoes Sisters!”
As Fate would ease down the cards, they never met in the park until a year later.
The stinking bridge closed, hurricane
damage again, this time fallen trees darkly
jamming the far aperture.
She turned to him in anticipation, looking
in that stark, chalky light like a moll from
a thirties film.
He adored thirties films, especially their
unrelenting noir, and almost began to
say "You look like a..."
She heard that, though he said nothing,
preferring, always, to keep his love to himself.
They never meet again.
Or maybe they do, but who gives a shit?

When Mother Went to Prison
Was because the DA too down
in his quota of women.
Anyway, the teens hugged
the little ones and we became
a family. Headed by Super Charmer
Dad, who skated close to the flames,
of course.
Mom paroled after two years,
and she and the older children meet
at our kitchen table with the lawyers
to save Dad. However, Sheriff Fearing
appears at the door with paperwork.
Dad extracted from his fleecing
cyber programs in the den.
Sheriff put an arm around him, leaving.
The effect Dad had on everyone.

The Banker
-You’re sure then...safe room?
-If they did manage to tap in here, they’d
get Mickey Mouse with laryngitis.
-At any rate, I was the most righteous
when most criminal. Derivatives
addicted me. The crazier, the more
heroin-like!
-Democrats threatened jail time!
-Not an idle one. Hadda sweeten their pot.
-But as Republicans through and through,
how can we give...?
-Any port in a storm.
-Should the Grand Old Party worry?
-Not for a millisecond! Cut taxes on the rich
and fuck the bitch!
-Music to our ears. But...as to John Q?
-He’s included in the latter part.
-Likes the attention.

Criminals All
-Well, we meet once more! Your Holmes to
my Moriarty! Dr Stark Z Reilly, noted
Criminologist! Expert in the Annals of Cri...!
-Speaking of which, you're probably in there.
-No such luck, Grimy Guru. No convictions.
-Oh?
-Ooops, I spoke too fast. Pinched for Speeding
in New Jersey. Paid the fine. Case closed.
-So, a criminal.
-Yeah, a regular Baby Face Nelson, Willy Sutton,
Lucy Borden, even--for modern variety’s sake,
and sexual tolerance in all acceptable examples.
-She was acquitted.
-Ah but the rhyme lives on! Pen being mightier than
the Shiksa!
-Whatever. No thefts or assaults on your record?
Convicted or not?
-Hey, in our neighborhood? Lifting something was, like,
a Badge of Honor! So when that retired cop, Totally White
Leary, trimmed his rosebushes with a neat-o little hand
thing, and absently put it down...?
-You...?
-So pretty! Like jewelry. But I did it just to hear him roar.
-Assaults?
-Ex and I, après drunken ice skating. One frozen word leads
to another and we swing some vicious haymakers. But they
land on layers and layers, so we just get exhausted to icy tears.
I can still hear the muffled blows and shrieks of frustration.
-Lovely story, but just Assault. Disturbing the Peace etc.
At any rate, you're a criminal all right!
-Hey, key me into your Annals of Vicious Crime then!
Be my guest! Like, lemme aid your academic freakin
career with my dark example!
-You're already in there!
-Oh yeah? Well maybe I care a hell of a lot more about
what St Peter is bringing up on HIS laptop.
-He's in The Cloud.
-Atheist humor, weaker than most.

When Lucille left Bucky for the last time, he metamorphosed
into a sexual idiot.
The girls he bribed with presents should have spent
their time with the studs they craved, but they did think
he was funny. Funny.
At the end he hooked up with a real criminal, a woman
who extorted many before. Had served some time.
Unjustly in her intricately articulate view. Insanity!
His health, no wonder, went to shit.
Internist, of course, informed him he was killing
himself.
At this stage I met him again–-after mucho avoidance.
He asked for my sister’s number. I didn’t politely
withhold it, I told him flat out that he had lost his
character, and I wouldn’t inflict him on anybody I loved.
Or anybody, really.
He told me I wasn’t a friend. And that it was easy to be cold
with puny inexperience. And that girls were looking for
fun and sex and not quotes from Wallace Stevens!
So that last stung? Many have done as well.
He was stopped with his criminal on the Blue Route,
trunk of her powder blue Cadillac loaded with high-end
watches lifted from Sansom Street jewelers.
And toasters. Toasters!
Cocaine in passenger door. He rode next to it,
knowing or not. So, in deepest shit.
I don’t say this lightly, but better he should die.
Narcissus cannot rehab, knowing more than
the rest of us combined.
No, I’m not just nursing the hurt he gave me...maybe a little.
But the issues are larger here if we wish to continue with
some kind of moral, and not animalistic, world. Okay,
sounds pretentious. I must own it though, since I do feel
that way.
There always exists the risk everywhere that “cool”
people will call you asshole. Courageous individuals
relish it. I’m not there yet.
But I call them as I see them, however tremulously.

His air announced loner so we exchanged
the briefest of pleasantries.
Left him to his own devices.
Which became clearer when squad cars
hemmed us in, ticking away.
TV remains on, a blue wash on humid evenings.
Dogs twitch on their walks.

“Let's have the talent”
TV director noted for
poisonous enunciation

The bank director romances
it, calling it in for bonuses
after government bailouts.
Captain Blood has risen!--

mobbed with those
